What canister? The air box? the vacuum canister? or if you have a California model, the evap canister? picture would help a ton

so... if you've got a CA model, and you remove it, you save a pound or two of weight, and risk federal EPA charges?

Charcoal canisters are supposed to collect the gasoline that evaporates in the tank while the vehicle sits, hold it so it doesn't pollute the environment, then release it into the engine to be burned when the engine is running.  If you ever have gotten the check engine light on your car to turn on because you didn't tighten the gas cap fully, that is because the computer ran a evaporative emmissions system integrity test and detected a leak (the loose cap).  Motorcycle evap. systems are still pretty primitive, more akin to the emmissions equipment on a 1980's/early '90's car.
