Happened to me just last week while I was trying to pass a truck.  I was able to pull back, switch to reverse, and moved on, but I strained muscle a bit doing so, the switch is so way back, and hard to reach.  Need practice on that i guess.

Similar happened to me- I was going up a bridge and it started to bog. I go to switch to reserve.....IT'S ALREADY THERE!!!! I forgot to switch back after filling up!  I make my way to the peak of the bridge and toss it into neutral but I was only doing about 30mph and it was a shaZam! my pants moment until I was about halfway down the other side.  I was slowing down the entire time.  Pulled off the road, took a moment then hopped off  and started hiking it to the gas station.
