Does anyone store/park their bike outside(not in garage) in winter? or in summer

Especially if you live in big cities? do you chain and lock it or just leave it on the road like a car? Did your bike ever got stolen or did anyone ever stole some part from your bike? (wondering wondering)

My bike got stolen outside of my apartment complex this summer.  The people who stole it though are retarted and tried to punch the ignition, and couldnt start it, then cut the wires to try and hot wire it, and blew the main fuse, and then ditched the bike.  I appreciate the retartedness, though.

whatever bike im currenrly riding gets parked on the street outside my house. it gets chained to a lamp post and a chain through the back wheel also. the rest of the bikes are kept in a garage a few miles from my house.

ive had a bike stolen from outside the house also. it only had a small chain at the time and was easily cut unfortunatley.

a cover helps to deter thieves.

Here's how quick a bike can be stolen... 40 seconds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob61ot5ZBiI

Disk lock, chain would be my bare minimum outside and even bike alarm. But, I have a garage and so it spends the night in there - and at work it is off street and always people around and security cameras so bike not seen from the street at work.

If you have a first-floor apartment, bring it inside.

If you have a non-first-floor apartment and a big elevator, or are really good at riding stairs, do the same.  :)

Haha, nothing like a high school dropout with friends that tell him rumors about how easy it is to start a vehicle with anything that's metal.

This isn't specifically bike related, but it's not uncommon for car mirrors to get knocked off, so there's always a threat of unsupervised kids with too much free time who are just looking to break stuff that isn't theirs. A cover would probably help with that too though.

I've never had a bike stolen, but when I lived with a roommate a couple years ago, I left my bike parked on the little patio off the driveway by our back door. At one point she left her keys in the door. One of the kids that lived next door stole them, and a couple days later she came home and saw them sitting on the steps between the driveway and patio looking at the bike. We assume they were hoping one of the keys on her keychain was for my bike, but no such luck.

Yep, under a 10x10 car port thing and a bike cover, no problems yet... Had to tie down the cover though..

I don't have a garage in Baltimore so whatever bikes I have with me are left outside.  I never had a problem with the GS over the 2 years I had it down here.  The worst that happened was a neighbor backing into it while parallel parking.  The previous owner had it longer on the sidewalk in a worse neighborhood without it ever being stolen/vandalized.  I was more worried with the SV but so far no one has messed with it.  Your best bet is always a good insurance policy.

As for the covers, I don't like them.  At least not inexpensive ones.  I thought putting covers on my bikes was a good idea until I saw the damage it caused.  Water/moisture got trapped under the covers and made the chrome parts really rust up.  Maybe a more expensive cover would work better but I'm not going to bother finding out.

The only reason I think I'd really want a cover on my bike if it was outside, is because I think I'd be more worried about random drunk kids thinking they should sit on it and make engine noises while they pretend they're in a motorcycle race, and knocking it over when they're climbing on it. A removable strap with rusty nails for the seat would also accomplish the same thing.

Mine gets parked in the garage nightly, and the only key stays in my bedroom upstairs.

When parking in public, I find the best policy is park next to a nicer bike. 'Nuff said.

While I don't tend to bother pulling it into the garage, I do store it there in the winter months just to keep it out of the snow and below freezing temps. I found that a heated garage is a wonderful thing to have in the winter. As far as daily parking.. Always in the driveway, usually behind the gate. Have thought about an anti theft system/alarm. Anyone know of a decent economically effective one? Steering lock and my pit bulls do ok, but it's hard to get the dogs on the bike. Want something with a key Fob and ignition kill.

There's a shopping center nearby and a Harley guy parks his bike NOT in the bike zone. Maybe he figured bike thieves will look there first. Either way, when I go to that shopping center I Try to park next to him  :icon_mrgreen: And if that's not possible I make sure there are other bikes in the bike area. And there usually are thigns like CBR1000s or R6s or R1s. THEY become my insurance policy

hey was thinkin wire up the handle bars so that you can set them to wear if they get knocked it shocks you tremenesly.  kinda the way bug zappers work, the positive and neg. are so close that takes almost nothing to connect them and shock you.  hook to the battery, or if you keep it close to the house, pug it in. 120 Volts (in America) going throgh you once will make you back off.
