Has anyone done this tail mod?

I found this shopped pic of a GS with the rear tail cut down, making the rear seat into a solo seat.

I used the search function, but couldn't find anything. Are there any threads out there with actual pictures/how-to's ?

Never seen it done here, definitely just a photo shop. What did he photoshop onto the outside of the exhaust? I'll give him credit for relocating the passenger peg adn exhaust mount, but it looks like he just cut the subframe off and left it. Give it a shot though, it looks good!

Reminds me of this bike.....

I'm thinking about doing this mod, but with the tail section from a CBR600.

Do you guys think that if I go with a solo seat, that I would still need to triangulate what would be left of the subframe? Or would it be strong enough with just the top section? I weigh about 150lbs.

gregvhen

you could fit a small trianle that can be hidden under the CBR plastics, but i wouldnt go just straight bars of the main frame with no support.

servus,

that mod was never build.

I'm thinking about using a CBR6RR tail, instead of the GS's tail. It looks a little cleaner, I think.

Keep in mind, I have absolutely no skill with Photoshop or anything, so I use Paint. Here's what I might go for.

If I do get around to doing this, I also want to have the exhaust pipe cut and angled to a more upright position.

I wanted to do a subframe swap, but I don't really have the skill to do welding/fabbing, so I'm looking for something simpler. Plus, I love the look of single seat fighters! haha

I love the way an exhaust looks when it's angled up, as long as the tail works with it.

Are you just planning on using the rear cbr passenger seat to go with the back of the tail?

I was thinking about that, but I might have to fab something up when it comes to that. All of the seats I can find for the rear on the CBR are shaped like this:

With the front being squared off the way it is, I don't think it's going to fit right against my GS's tank. I'm thinking I'll have to use the base of the seat, and add more foam around the front to fit the tank. Then recover it. I'm trying to stray away from using just the generic seat foam.

JEREMY JOCK

Are the tanks from early model GS's interchangable with the new models? I have an 04. I was thinking instead of making a custom seat, the actual rear seat from the CBR might work against the tank of an older GS, seeing as how it would be flat, instead of having the cuts for the newer style seat.

This is what I mean.

I can't see the last picture you posted, but the tanks are interchangable. The only issues are the way the seats and rear bodywork line up with it, but if you're changing tanks because you want that seat to fit the way it would on the older tanks, than you'd be set.

On a side note, I replaced my tail a while ago and have always wanted one of the newer tanks to replace my older style. I've had a talk with someone who may trade me a newer tank for my '92 tank, but if that doesnt' work out, and you decide you want to try one of the older style tanks you should let me know, because I'd be up for a trade.

I had to uncover the R6/R1 seat I have on mine, cut away some of the plastic and fabric and staple the cover back on to make it fit the '92 tank since the back of it is flat and doesn't take a seat that wraps around, so you could do something similar with the passenger seat to cut the front flat. It might be possible to take a cbr passenger seat, and a front seat off of another bike, uncover them, cut them to match, and epoxy the front off another seat onto the body of the passenger seat, or get a plastic welder, but I've seen plenty of people try to make their own seats, and they rarely come out looking the way they should just because good foam and vinyl is hard to come by unless you have a source.

JEREMY JOCK

That's a good idea, about matching two seats together and using epoxy. I'll look more into that. But, if I do go for an older tank, I'll let you know if I decide to trade.

Thanks for the input! :icon_mrgreen:

The sides might be a little too tall, but I just saw this seat on ebay and it reminded me of what you were talking about doing. It might work against the back of the gs tank and still be small enough to fit.

Nice. I like the paint and the bars. Seat's a little crude, but seats are difficult.
I've been thinking about taking the rear plastics off mine.
Have you got a shot of yours from the other side?
Lot more ugly-assed wiring over there.
