GS500 engine, K0, under 1900 miles in great shape

I bought this a few months ago as I was certain my GS450 was about to spit out a wrist pin or crank pin. Never used it, the 450 is still running strong.

So now I have a really clean K0 engine from a 500E looking for a good home. I could use the space and the money. If you are serious please PM me and I will snap pictures for you. The engine came from a salvage bike. The forks were bent and so was the frame. But the engine really is pristine. Judging from how my own 500F looks, this bike must have been garaged and rarely ever ridden.

According to the paperwork, it has 18XX miles and it sure looks it. Bear in mind it is the engine only - no carbs, no electrics, no starter motor. I am asking for exactly what it cost me - $900.00 I prefer local pick up and cash in hand.

Hi there,
Oh,man, I hate to tell you, but if you actually paid $900 for the engine, you really overpaid.
Such an engine is worth $500 MAX for a GS500 on the used market.
Just letting you know, that's what everyone on this site has been selling and buying these engines for in the more than 8 years I have been a member here. Usually the price is $350 to $500, and that includes the starter and other bits which are missing from yours. When you say there are no electricals included, do you mean that the stator and windings are missing from the end of the crank?
I know there is at least one or two people here looking for a good engine right now on this site, but that price is out of this world.
Here's a 2006 engine on ebay right now, with 12 hours to go, in NY state:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/05-SUZUKI-GS500-MOTORCYCLE-ENGINE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem4cec468988QQitemZ330381560200QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
It starts at a $300 bid.
A buyer can find a whole GS500 for $1200 to $1500 here on the site, at the low end.
Good luck, but be forewarned.
I see you have a low post count here. Did you just find GStwin.com? You couldn't possibly have bought that engine through anyone here.

i will decode what he is saying.......GStwiners are very cheap and want everything for nothingor next to nothing.  there for he is recomending you put it on ebay to maxamize your cash return.  either way good luck with your sale.  he did however forget to mention that the few motors that have sold here were junk IIRC

No need to decode anything...He said it plainly enough.

300-500$ is about the average price for a Gs500e  engine.

But 18xx miles is alot less than average.   Most average motors probably don't come with paperwork either.

If you did, welcome to GStwin.  Most people would have the respect to withhold their negative comments unless there was some obvious mechanical flaw or mistake.  Some don't have that courtesy.  Best of luck with your sale.
My 90 GS500E has spread itself across the nation.

I've bought entire 3200, yes 3200 mile bikes for $800 .  I've bought running  bikes  with 10-12k for  300$ (hell I paid 150$ for one that I put 150$ into it fixing it including the inspection..).

What's paperwork really mean? I can put a number on a piece of paper. I'd rather see the bike it came out of---and to be clear-- nobody is questioning the miles.

If you can get 900$ for a GS500e engine- more power to you.

Not looking to argue but I bought this bike Tuesday for $200.  No way to know if the miles are legit (speedos are easily swapped) but the engine looks pretty clean and has good compression.  Like Jared said though, you can't fault a guy for trying to get top dollar for his stuff   :thumb:

My comments weren't being disrespectful.
They were being honest and realistic.
Jared, thanks for your similar reasoning.
And Josh, I don't think GStwin members are cheap. We're just dealing with less-expensive stuff. They are GS500 twins, not carbon-fiber and magnesium and titanium clad sports bikes. They're fabulous bikes without the flash. That's why parts are cheaper.
Ineedanap, no disrespect meant at all. Usually I don't say anything when people have something to sell for more than usual, but this was one I couldn't not comment about.
If the 8-post guy can sell it for that much, fabulous. I was just telling him that that's not what the market is around here.
If you think I'm wrong, do a search of engine prices here.
Have a nice night everyone.
A good conversation, as usual. :)

Hi all,

I sure should have checked here first... 500 bucks?  :icon_eek:

I knew I was paying over fair value, but it was nearby. The only other clean 500 engine I found was on e-bay and he was asking 1200 dollars for an engine located near Toronto, so go figure what shipping would have cost.

ok so your going to show a 300 dollar motor nice but did you notice that bike was wrecked and the motor needs work before install.  needed a side cover and maybe more.  might have greamlins in that motor with it hitting hard enough to bust that side cover.

if you want to compair motors on ebay heres one
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Suzuki-GS500-06-Engine-Motor-102760_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem45ee45269bQQitemZ300350252699QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
its an 06 motor 799.00 and 100 shipping it is completely stripped down to just a motor no side covers no clutch no sprocket no carbs no electrical no starter no paperwork

heres another one
http://cgi.ebay.com/2004-Suzuki-gs-gs500-500-motor-base-crank-engine-piston_W0QQitemZ350278313001QQcmdZViewItemQQptZSnowmobile_Parts_Accessories?hash=item518e36e429
499.99 shippings not listed but all this is, is the lower cases with pistons no head or cylinders no clutch or side covers.

I have also done a bunch of searching on here to find prices of motors sold on gstwin and what i found was a motor sold for 300 with shipping that cost another 300 to fix IIRC.  1 guy that said he bought 2 motors cheap and they were both junk when he got them as well.  So from what i have found after searching here and ebay is this.

If your in need of a motor and dont want to mess with just rebuilding your own for whatever reason that maybe,  This motor (altho priced high according to a few members) really isnt all that high if you consider a few things.
paperwork stating 18XX miles. find a gs500 E or F this under 2000 miles and see what that bike will cost you.  Stating that you bought a complete bike for 200 means nothing to this guy.  Thats like contacting someone on craiglist.  It happened to me when selling my wifes dirt bike.
"Hello I was wondering if you would take 100 for your 87 dr125 suzuki dirt bike?  My friends bother in laws ex-wifes sisters husbands unlce just bought the exact same bike that needed some work for 300"  my responce "I guess you should have bought that one cuz mine is 900 and runs great needs nothing. Now stop emailing you cheap bastard.  Have a great day."

Just because you came across a great deal/someone just wanted to off load a bike to get it outta there hair doesnt mean everyone else should drop there prices to that price.

Josh,
Calm down.
You need to relax. :)
We're just having a conversation.
I see Mauricio's points, too.
I was just pointing out the obvious. And it is still obvious. GS500 engines don't typically sell for that much money.
It's the same thing I have said about people who spend too much for a rough GS500. If you pay too much you'll never get your money back out of it after you invest money to fix it all up.
We're all on the same side here, man.
Like I said, we're all just talking about this.
Even Mauricio is cool about everyone's input.
I do understand your points, too.
But the $799 eBay engine is a major "buyer beware" item. That's not even close to being a good risk and any buyer of that would have to be nuts. Just because it's there doesn't mean that the seller will sell it.
And the $300 engines you refer to that "were junk," OK, that can happen too.
There are plenty of people here who buy and sell whole engines that they say are fine for about $500, like it or not.
You NEVER know for sure when buying a used part or engine, even a low mileage engine. If the previous owner didn't take care of this one with "only 1800 miles" it can be ruined too.
ALL of your points, my points, and everyone else's here are valid and true.
We're cool.
:)

I understand. We're good. :)
Man, we all are so passionate about our GS500s aren't we?
Very cool.
It's snowing here in PA today.
I'm dreaming about riding and getting my new Suzuki DR650 handguards installed on my bike to ride more comfortably in the cold weather here!
Have a great weekend, all!

Like I said I'm not looking to argue either, I was just giving my recent example to back up other peoples points.  I wish I would have known about this forum before I spent $320 on a front rotor to get my first GS through inspection

I still have it, and I'm still selling it. Time to gather the funds for my next ridiculous project...  :icon_mrgreen:

I have resigned myself to the fact I'll never get all of my money back, but I will consider all serious offers.
