paper gaskets

I just checked the clearance on my valves, they were all within spec!  When I removed the breather cover though, the gasket ripped.  My father-in-law says I can make my own gasket out of a thin layer of cardboard like a file folder.  He has done this several times, mostly with intake gaskets on turbo diesels that see 30+ pounds of boost.  Do you think it is a good idea.  The closest dealer is 40miles away, and I don't feel like waiting for shipping or for the dealer to open.  Also, does anyone have a picture of what the gasket should look like, mine ripped to much I can't even tell.  Thanks

I've replaced gaskets with paper before. Usually something a little thicker like cereal boxes though. I'd be hesitant to use something as thin as a file folder, but your father-in-law probably has more experience than I do. Do you have a pepboys or anything like that near by? They sell rolls of paper made specifically for cutting gaskets for just a couple dollars that I've also used.

All that aside, if it's the gasket I'm thinking of, I'm not sure it's one I'd replace with thin paper. Aren't those gaskets made of something thicker than paper? I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the right one since you said your ripped, but if it's the one under that tiny little cover on the very top of the engine I seem to remember mine being thick and hard. Maybe there's just something wrong with mine??

i'd risk it. worst case is you have to clean off the oil that seeps, and replace the gasket again.

not many paw-in-laws actually get their hands dirty anymore, let alone know -ANYTHING- about turbo diesel, enjoy the help !

Hi there,
On that particular gasket, you should be fine making a simple gasket out of something. Try even some sheet gasket  material from an auto parts store.
No pressure there, no oil pooling up that high on the engine so it shouldn't leak.
You can always try making a gasket then order a stock one and have it as a backup. See if the dealer will order it for you over the phone then put it between cardboard and ship it to you in an envelope for cheap.
If you ask nicely, they may help you out and do that.
Good luck!
