What are the dimensions of the swing arm on the GS500F '05 model?

I have a buddy with on whom I am doing a little modding on (rear shock starting off) and he wants a wider rear wheel/tire setup. I saw the on on the wiki and really would like to go as far as a 5.5" GSXR wheel/180 tire like on my 86 GSXR 750.

Now I know you said the 4.5 with a 160 tire barely fits the stock swing arm but what about swapping an early or late model GSXR swing arm? would this be possible do you think? he wants better handling on it than what it has now and with the stiffer shock (katana or sv650) and a 120F/180R tire combo his patch on the road would keep him stickier in and out of the corners.

Give me input on this whether good or bad

The GS swingarms have been the same since the model has been out.

That being said, the only real way to get meat in the rear is the Kat/Sv rear wheel swap.  But that will only net a 160 at the most.

You can mate any rear swingarm you want to any bike but that requires more than just a bolt up job.  There are a couple builds on here with custom swingarms and they are far from stock.

SO you and your "friend" need to figure out what you want.

The mascot of the GS500.. The creature that's got the biggest ugliest a$$ of them all.
A wombat. It's got a big ugly a$$ too.

he just wants a wider tire he said. He told me last spring when he was riding his bike with his wife on the back, he went into a corner and it felt like it was going to slip out from under him.

He loves the look of my 86 gixxer 750 but wants to stick with his newer bike (not really a huge fan of them myself)

His bike was recently paid off so he wants to mod it now that he doesnt have payments anymore.

I know its not a "bolt in" swap that is why I am asking for dimensions to measure out potential swap parts.

Heres my gixxer :)

oh and the gs500 IS my buddies bike he just knows NOTHING about them and how to work on them. He just rides em and brings them to me and my brother for repairs. I wouldnt step down to a 500 after my 750.

cheap solution and advice for your friend: put sport demons (or other sticky tires) in stock sizes on it and he will be good to go.

If it is true he wants better handling that what it has now, stiffer shock and sticky tires is all that is required.  The problem with the stock wheel is that sticky rubber that is that narrow is hard to come by.  To go with a 4.5" wheel will give lots of options.  Wider doesn't necessarily mean better handling.  Now, if he's just honest and just wants a wider tire because it looks fast, just say so.  Anything can be made to fit:

yeah i decided to swap fairings to the 89-90 front fairings and I broke the 86 left lower (it was repaired 7 times by the PO) taking it off.

No need for an extra wheel at this time. though If we find the gixxer swingarm will work we may hit you up for it for the gs.

there is a sweet old school copy of a TEAM yoshi under brace swing arm on e bay for 86

The truth is that no matter how wide the rear tire is, the contact patch is still going to be the same because the weight of the motorcycle hasnt changed. If your friend wants better handling then get better tires but even with cheap stock tires I can still swing into a corner at 60mph and up.
