possible - sure. needed - no. cost-effective - not unless you have reasonable electro-mechanical skills and value your time at nothing. (after reading other thread) Hmm - given the extent of your problems with figuring out a blowing fuse, you'd probably better skip this mod.

Engine whining - shift up. Engine lugging - shift down. Can't shift up - in 6th. Coming up to a stop - stomp on the shifter 5 times (hint - do this before you get stopped - it works better). Extra stomps won't hurt if you were not in 6th. You could also learn the relationship between your tach and speedo and know what gear you are in, but if your engine is happy, it doesn't really matter what gear you are in.

Click the search box and type in gear indicator. Recent DIY modification of the neutral switch, old replace neutral switch with gear-indicating neutral switch ($$), various approaches to display.

This is nearly always something that folks without 1000 miles under their belt are SURE they NEED. Go put on 1000 miles. You don't need it. If you WANT it as part of whatever you see as you need to modify your bike in a particular way, go to, it's only money. But you don't NEED it.

Don't need the gear indicator, but would be nice to have it. You can almost say the same about the tach. Same for gauges for fuel level, temperature, oil pressure, charge level, etc.

Some people, like me, don't like iPod shuffle because it has no display to show what song it's playing or where you are in the the playlist.

The Veypor comes with a gear indicator; you can get one for around $150.

Neither does my tape player! I could care less what I'm listening to, the only reason it'd be easier if I knew is because people will always say "what record was that song on??" and I rarely even know what song they're talking about.

I definitely have a use for a tach. If I was going to get rid of one of the 2 main gauges it would be the speedo. Only threat there is a speeding ticket, but it would have absolutely no affect on my ability to ride. I can ride normal without a tach no problem, but if I'm really going at it, I can definitely make some use out of it.

I've never had a need for a whole gear indicator setup, but I'd love a little indicator light on the dash just to tell me when I'm in 6th. No real benefit aside from never having to try to shift into 6th when I'm cruising on the highway just to find out I'm already there. The only other use would be if you were messing around on a bigger bike, and wanted a certain gear to wheelie when you were already cruising in a higher gear, and didn't want to pull in the clutch, shift all the way to 1st, then count back up to 2nd or 3rd gear. Like I said, not an issue on the GS though.

The problem I have with indicator lights in general is that, if they're bright enough to be seen in direct sunlight, they're too bright and distracting at night when they're on constantly. Then you'd wish for brightness control for those lights. I have this problem with the high beam indicator when it's very dark out. I guess I could either change it to a lower wattage bulb (LED), or put a piece of paper tape over it to reduce its brightness.

At least one of the gear indicator mods in the archives had a brightness control built in. Not too hard if you can do very basic electronics - though putting those electronics in the weather (ie, on a bike) is often a problem.
