Remove Stock Bar End

Anyone have any tips on how to remove the stock bar ends?

I can unscrew the black, exterior part of it.  But there's the plug portion that's inside the handle bar and it seems stuck.  I tried using some larger washers up against handle bar and a longer bolt w/ some nuts on it.  The idea was to tighten up on the nuts and cause it to pull the plug out.  Ended up bending the washers inwards and almost breaking the bolt!

Is it just glued in or is it attached some other way?

Did you try an allen wrench? that is how mine came out!

depends on what year the bars are from.  my first GS was a '91 and had those screw in things welded in there so no amount of pulling would help.

Sorry, it's a 98.

There is a black bar end that extends beyond the grip.  A hole through the center of it for a screw.  Inside the actual handle bar is a white "plug" with a threaded hole in it.  Maybe I'll try to get a pic later tonight.  I can only assume it's glued in place.  The white part is what I'm trying to remove.

An allen wrench wouldn't do anything in this case.

Mine were stuck in there pretty tight, it was just a long rod with rubber grommets on the outside holding it in. It was pretty hard to get out considering their purpose was to hold the bar end in. I think if I twisted the bolt with the bar end on, it would get so tight, and then eventaully spin it loose.

Why exactly are you trying to pull it out? If you're replacing the bar ends with something else, like other bar ends or mirrors that have the expanding rubber, you can just remove the expanding insert and run the bolt straight through to the peice inside the bar. Otherwise get another bolt that's a little longer, and see if tapping it with the hammer will break it loose. Not too hard because you don't want to jam it farther into the bar if it's hard to get out, but it will atleast give you an idea if it is willing to move at all. If you tape it with the hammer and it doesn't budge, I'd say it's not going anywhere.

Hi if your bike is a European model with clicp on bards the insert you mention is welded into the bar. Standard tubular bar end with expanding fixings will not fit. The screw pitch is very fine and i have been unable to obtain a screw that will fit. I know this as i purchased clipons to fit on my GS500F but have yet to fit them as i haven't been able to source some bar ends that will fit. Fit anyone knows where i can get some here in the UK i would be very grateful.

You could always take a tap (or a drill and a tap, depending on size) and re-thread those to a more normal thread.

Has anyone tried re-tapping successfully?  Mine's a '97 European GS500E.
