Finished Custom GS Streetfighter

This is just a little timeline thingy of my GS. She's an 07 (F) that I bought new and over the 2 years she's gone from a new motorbike to a good looking naked bike to a heap of twisted metal with an engine and now she looks like some sort of a streetfighter.
(All my pictures were shot with my phone, sorry for bad quality)

Started out like this:


Then was changed to look like this:



Then ended up like this after crash:
(Note the smashed KOSO speedo, it was a nice speedo)




Rebuilding:


I used gutter mesh to make up the new rear.


Not too bad for a free hand painting of the stripes.


And now looks like this:




Any thoughts on the new look?

(I was going to include pictures of my leg/chest after the crash but it's not pretty, lucky I was wearing full armor and boots)

The stripes ruin it, for me. I don't really like stripes on anything no matter how well they are done.

Care to tell us a little more about the crash? How'd it happen, what did you do, what would/should you have done in hindsight, etc.

is it just the picture, or is there little bits of redish pink accent color all over the bike?

The headlight only shines about 10ft infront of me at night, still have to adjust it.

Crash= lost it on a bad corner in the mountains, put the back brake on coming into a bend when there was oil on the road and had been raining early in the day so the back wheel locked up. I slid about 10m into a guard rail, crushed my left side between the bike and the rail at about 70-80kms and ended up breaking my fema, putting a hole through my right leg (i think the handlebars went through my leg), too much road rash to list, something scraped along my chest with enough force to tare my leather jacket in two and leave its mark in my chest all this and one major exhaust burn! haha

The stripes draw your eyes away from the massive dents in the tank, =P.

I think its just the bad camera, nothing pink/red on the bike.

Ok. So, too fast for the corner under those conditions. Should'a slowed it down a tad to give more scanning and reaction time, right?

With some friends too, were you? Where the "moment" sweeps you away and you Have to impress or something like that? Or maybe focusing too much on the bike in front and not the road? Was the corner on your Lean Preference side or the Non Lean Preference side? Had you come out of a previous bend with increasing throttle only to be surprised by a sudden decreasing radius? Other debris on the road adding to the rear lockup? Feeling pressure from bikes behind? Checking bikes behind in mirror just before hand - so less time to see oncoming hazards? Unfamiliar road? Small amount of alcohol consumed beforehand? Just after a bike lunch while body is releasing insulin which makes you a tad drowsy? (No need to answer, just some thinking stuff is all.)

You're not the fellow that ended up on the news coming off on the way down from Springbrook a month or two back, are you?

Glorious got me. Foggy morning. Rained the night before so road wet in patches (on apexes) and plenty of wet leaf debris. Steep decent. Unfamiliar road. Increasing radius turned suddenly into Decreasing radius. Came out way wide. Not bad if the road went straight - but - it was an Immediate right followed then by an immediate left. Now way out of line and speed all shot to hell to make them both without going into oncoming traffic. Touch the brakes. Sat up. Drifted wide. Wider. Slowing. I can make it. I can make it. Wider. Ditch approaching. Just give me one more meter and I'll make it. On the slippery wet leaves and other debris now Fug! Now fixating on the ditch. Almost stopped. Front wheel hits the muddy leafy ditch. Sinks. Stops. Over I go. Other than scratches only damage is bent handlebar. So I ride the bike home. I am injury free! Not even a bruise? All gear is damage free too. WTF?!

Thing was, I was going to be trading in that bike THAT WEEK on my GS! I had to wait for the insurance to repair it before I could trade it and get my GS.

When I had my old bike I was out riding with my friend on his 954 down in W Virginia, and another guy came along. He used to have an ex500, and was squirrely as could be on it, but then he bought a cbrf2. He had it about 2 days before we all rode down there for a nice day of riding. The FIRST real bend we came to he took too wide and slammed into a guard rail, cracking his engine in half and wedging the bike under the guard rail via the frame slider. What a mess. We spend hour sitting in some golfing snack bar until one of his friends could drive down to pick him up.

Anyway, trying to keep up with people faster than you is an awful idea, they'll wait for you at the end. Other than that, I've taken plenty of turns too fast and almost missed an oil or gravel spot. Never crashed because of it yet, but it happens, no big deal.

Everything is learning. Our own experiences and the experiences of others. And it's from others who've experiences we don't that we can sometimes learn without needing 1st hand experience.

It wasn't until one rider who'd gone too wide in a corner and come off, had carefully analysed the event and relayed it, that I'd noticed I tended to do the same thing while riding, that he did to crash.

What he'd done was, looked in his mirror while in a bend to see how his riding buddy was doing behind him. By the time he took his eyes off the mirror he was too wide and too far into being too wide to pull out of it.

After this, I noticed that I too would check my mirror while leaned over in a bend to see riders behind me. It was something I was doing without thinking. Hearing what caused That crash made me notice it in my own riding. And gave me something to work on and improve.

It was a near down that made me realize ALL intersections have a Debris Zone where cars do not go and so the gravel and sand gathers there.

It was dark on a poorly lit T intersection. I was on the main road wanting to turn across the oncoming traffic into the side road. A truck was half way out of the side road and in the oncoming-traffic's lane wanting to turn to my lane. I had to take the corner Wider and Later than usual. Which placed me right in the debris field as I was leaning. I lost traction and started going down. A quick foot-down gave me the small support I needed until I got traction and I made it through - though with one bloody sore foot.

Sure, we aim NOT to ride on those parts of the road. But my Awareness of them has increased a million fold since that time. And ALL intersections have them. Just the size of the Debris Zone and the amount of debris in them varies. Keep an eye out for them.

I was riding by myself, no cars around (at the time). Speed was not a factor as i was just under the limit coming into the corner, just hit a wet patch and slid.

I crashed just south of the qld/nsw boarder near Tweed.

I really really love the bike, man!  Hey, how did you make the seat/tail end work out?  I'd like to do the exact same thing to my bike so I can justify keeping it another season or two (or forever).  Is there any way to get a detailed description of what you did; like a thread or something?

It's pretty easy to do. All i did was cut the frame off where it joins the rear support to the frame. Then cut the mudguard to fit, then just poprivited some gutter mesh around the frame to act at some sort of protection for the blinkers and all the other important stuff there. I dont think i have any pictures of myself cutting the frame, sorry mate.

Yeah, the headlight is a bit messy. The only reason my old headlight is back on is because people can tell its me from a distance when they see the weird shaped light coming towards them, lol. Wouldn't mind a Hayabusa headlight, i reckon they look pretty mean.

No worries, the 'Gina headlight is actually really popular for the GS fighterers.

That bike was glorious before the crash! I love the 'Gina light. Also, looks mad-maxi currently. Not bad, but not as good as it was. I think the polished lip on the rims does a lot for it.

Yeah i agree, it was nice before the crash. Today im re-making the rear end, my washing maching broke so im going to use the metal sides and try make the rear end a bit stronger.
