Will the cables be ok without extending them if I put 2" bar risers on ? If not how about 1"? Anything would be nice.

Thanks!

The cables an be re-routed to get a little extra length usually, but front brake lines usually can't do much. Try unbolting your handlebars from the top triple, and see how high you can lift them before the cables stop them.

So,i think  what tt_four said is the best to do ''Try unbolting your handlebars from the top triple, and see how high you can lift them before the cables stop them.''

If you put two inches risers you will have to reroute the choke cable(new position, outer of the fork). Also, you need a new brake hose cause the stock is too short for that mod, and finally you will have to pull a couple of inches the two black cables leading from the headlight to the handlebars(it is good to remove the two screws from the headlight ring, pull out the bulb and see how to''unhook'' the wire harness as to gain some cable space--i have done the same with my bike..http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=51149.0)

If you put 1 inch riser i really don't know what is going to happen.. :dunno_white:

But for sure i know that if you put genmar risers with angle(http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/HandlebarRisers), you will have to reroute the choke cable and  to unscrew the upper brake line clamp and then find a way to ''bind'' it again to another position...

I put the GenMar risers on my 97 GS and transferred them to my current 02 GS moving the bars 1" up and 1 3/8" back which is about 1 3/4" on the diagonal without any new cables or brake line being required.

I took the wires loose from the handle bars while I moved the bars and then pulled a little more wire from the headlight housing to put them back in place against the bars after moving the bars.  It was necessary to take the clamp loose holding the brake line to the lower tripple while moving the bars and then to reposition the clamp on the hose before putting it back making sure there was still a little bit of slack between the clamp and the caliper with the front suspension hanging at full extension.  After I was done I had to go back and reroute the choke cable behind the left fork tube to stop it from pulling the choke open and racing the engine at full steering lock right.

Should require only some cable and wiring adjustments to go straight up 1" and I thing you could go the 2" straight up also but take the bars and the brake line clamp loose and try it before ordering risers.  I like the up and back rather than the straight up relocation.

Me too on the gen mars. One hour of fiddling with cables and its fine.

I did find gen mars seem to loosen up by themselves, I carry allen wrench in tank bag now. Didn't use locktite, because I like to rotate bars up or down a bit from time to time.

I put SW-Motech bar backs on my 07.  These moved the bars up one inch and back one inch.  The only adjustment needed was a minor one to the clutch cable.

My only complaint so far on my gs500f is the combination of high seat and forward handlebars was real uncomfortable on wrists, back and crotch (as I humped the tank trying to get forward enough)   The risers from gen mar cured this! Highly recommend this mod
