I've changed the oil with my V&H a couple times and I never remove the exhaust. I don't remember having any trouble getting the filter out. Oil does run out on that one part of my exhaust, but that doesn't bother me much. You could cover that part of the pipe with aluminum foil or something while you're changing the oil if it bothers you too much.

I have replaced gaskets when I've taken it off, so I usually try my best to not take it off so I don't have to replace them. Knowing that other people here haven't changed theirs, I'll probably leave mine be next time.

I cant physically get the old filter out or the new one in with out removing the headers, I tried! where are you getting the filter through? what year is your gs?

A lot of people on the forum have had good luck with gas grill paint.

+1  I've repainted mine twice with BBQ paint and it looks mint. Doesn't last as long as powder coating though...
