I have quite the frankenbike, but long story short, i have a motor i would like to get working with a stock oil cooler... In looking at the pics, it appears that the oil pan handles the flow to the oil cooler... Would it be possible to swap the oil pan and Viola??? Also i plan on swappiong the electronics over as well, just havnt gotten there yet...

Thanks,

Viola ??? OK, fine Viola - So, It will work great as a Viola, but as an oil cooler it would suck.

There is a line running the length of that pan that fits tight into a fitting at the rear into an oil galley.
I hope there is some check valve of sorts that dont let the pressure bleed off into the cooler co then it will jus tflow to the cooler and starve the head/bottom bearings.

Anyway ... not just the pan swap for getting oil cooler working.

Cool.

Why do you want to add an oil cooler? The gs went 15 years without, and I think people have been sucessful removing them on 04+ bikes.

If you really want one, you might consider swapping in a newer engine. You'd get the electronic tach as a bonus.
'04 F to an E to a wreck to a Wee Strom?
HEL stainless brake lines

Not that simple. More than meets the eye...There is additional plumbing that is cast into the lower case along with a restictor to divert the flow while still using the same ol' pump.
Common sense in not very common.

So they say, But yea... its just a mental thing, i have the cooler, the proper frame why not add the pan and POOF, cooler oil... Cooler oil = longer lasting oil, or rather heat = shorter life... Anyways, hought i would ask.

The cooler was only added once the bike had full fairings.  If you have a naked model then the engine already gets plenty of air flow on the cooling fins.  Remember this is not a liquid cooled engine, it operates fine at much higher temperatures.  That being said, it doesn't hurt anything to have an oil cooler on a naked bike.  But there are some internal changes made to the engine to run the oil cooler, it is not as simple as just swapping oil pans.

There is such a thing as running too cool. If you think about it, an air-cooled motor is kind of like a water-cooled motor running with the thermostat stuck wide open. Max cooling all the time. Adding more cooling is not a good idea unless you have a specific situation that would require it. I have a GS1000S that has an oil temp gauge, it's amazing how long it takes for the oil to come up to normal temp, and it never gets too hot, even in stop and go traffic in 100+ heat. More cooling would be a very bad idea.

I thought multi viscosity oils work over a large temperature range. Yea additives come in when they get their temperature point, but cooler motors dont need that much friction modification additives being active.

Yea I can understand too cool - but I'd say over 150-160 is not going to be too cool. Maybe that is wrong, and yea I have had GS'es run better when hotter. Its loose worn rings and whatever was a mess when cold. Get it hot and its a blast.
