Hi all
Have been trawling these forums for a couple of months now to gather a bit of info on my first bike. A 2006 gs500. i've done about 6000kms in the last 4 months and have come across a few questions. I'm looking at a new exhaust and thought i may as well throw a k&n lunchbox in while im at it but i can only find the part number for models up to an '02. (RU-2970)
does anyone know of they are the same for an '06??  If i get a slip on and the lunchbox at different times will i have to rejet twice?? im looking at a megacycle exhaust, have a listen.

Also i checked my valve clearance and my right hand exhaust valve was 0.09. Will i do any damage leaving it at that as im having trouble tracking down the shim i need?

If anyone wants to go for a ride south of sydney let me know. im just south of the national park. my girlfriend has a honda spada vt250 and we're always looking for some new company on rides. i'm loving my gs so far and as a poor uni student am not looking to upgrade anytime soon so am keen to get the gs singing pretty.

Loving the forum guys. such a wealth knowledge and some great characters.
thanks heaps

Yes on the rejet twice if you do intake and exhaust at different times.

I believe the lunchbox is the same across the model years.

.09 is over the spec right right? I think that means the valve doesn't open fully which wouldn't kill anything short term, but I could be entirely wrong.

spec is .03-.08(i think). I don't imagine you're really going to hurt anything that bad, but I'd keep an eye out for the right size shim in the mean time. All of mine are out of spec at the moment, but I'm waiting until spring comes when I can actually ride the bike to a shop to pick some new ones up.

Glad you like the bike.

That's just barely out of spec in the good direction to be out of spec a little for exhaust valves (more time on seat == more valve cooling). I wouldn't sweat it. If you are not winding to 10,500 RPMs you'll probably not even notice it.

The shims are sized in 0.05 increments, so that you'd go to 0.04, which is in spec but on the tight end, and generally not great for long life with exhaust valves. The typical wear pattern of exhaust valves will probably put you in spec eventually. If you do swap the shim, save the old one, as you'll probably need it after a little while of running at the tight end (where exhaust valves tend to tighten faster).

Slip on first then K&N because fitting a K&N with the stock pipe makes it near impossible to jet right.
Now if you buy the jets from me I can make you a pack with the jets for now and later set up. Essentially you get the extra set of mains. Like in the other post its made for your bike/setup.
You need 20 mains, 65 mids, 132.5 mains, 1-2 washers and 3 turns with pipe.
Put the K&N on and its 147.5 mains - so all you change is the mains. If I were you, I'd run stock filter though. its a lot cleaner and better for longevity of the motor. I've had good luck washing it in gas and reusing it atleast 3 times. past that it sorta disintegrates too much ... so look at it and decide.

Cool.

Thanks heaps for all your quiick replys.
One of the main incentives behind getting this bike was the awesome community of happy riders out there and the wealth of information on this site (plus the great handling, easy maitence and cost). so thanks again to all.

Be in touch Remo. i hear the national park/mac pass / kangeroo valley /berry for coffee and sourdough calling.

Mister, i live in Austinmer. Come for a ride down and relive those sweet beach days. nothing better than a swim to wash off a ride thru nasho.

Cheers DoD for the advice too. Much appreciated

So i guess they call you the Buddha for a reason..... All seeing, all knowing. Thanks for the words of wisdom. Im really only looking for a bit more presence on the road. i've almost been taken out twice now from drivers who don't hear me hence the reason for a slip on. if you think the lunchbox is better for longevity then i mite run the stock for a while. i'll be keeping the gs for at least the foreseeable future. Cant really see a reason to upgrade. Not a power junky or anything. just love going camping with my 2 fav ladies (gs and G/f) ha!

Just one other thing
Did anyone check out the megacycle pipe that i posted??

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaTZJUHygc8

What don you think?

The dude that makes them says he's never had to rejet a gs for one of these pipe (he says he's done over 100).. Wierd??
Dose that mean that its not flowing anymore than a stock and therefor dosen't requie a rejet??? Any info on this would be much appreciated.
they sound nice but i could get a yoshi or jardine in here on oz for about the same price.

Cheers

How much are the exhausts that you're pushing on here? They sound ok, depends on the price though.

K pipe ... K&N hurts longevity - you got that right. Your statement was hard to decipher.

Buddha was a name werase643 used to call me when he thought it bugged me. When I decided I needed to change my identity I decided on buddha to bug werase643. I have it on good authority I dont see nothing ...

It was either that or "Duma". Which was his other name for me.

Cool.
