problem with wiring a new engine

I am in the process of testing out a spare engine (X) I have in the garage but I am stumped when comparing wires to my working engine (Y).

Engine Y has 3 wires that are colour coded Yellow / White-Blue / White-Green. I assume these are from the alternator and it is easy to match it to the harness with the same colour scheme. Engine X has the same 3 wires but they are all colour coded with yellow.

Will the engine run if I incorrectly attach these wires to the harness? Is there any way to definitively identify which wire is which?

If this is the left-side stator wires, they are all the same, and the all-yellow essentially acknowedged that.
Note the colored wires as you describe connect to all-yellow at the regulator/rectifier in this diagram. I think at some point they realized that there was no difference and no need for the color coding of the stator windings, so they stopped.

Yes, these wires come from the left side of the engine...sort of above the shaft which holds the front sprocket.

Is there any reason why 1 of my engines have 5 wires coming from it and another has 6 wires?

Another oddity I noticed is that I appear to get a minor shock when touching the carbs while the engine is running. Maybe I have a short somewhere but the the main fuse is not blown which confuses me. Could this be the sign of a bad battery or something?
