My freind has a 1985 CR125 2 stroke.  His grandpa put a new top end in and rebuilt carbs, but they cant kick start it.  They only pop start it, and have to keep it at high RPMs or it wil die.  Well im thinkin duh, carb problems, pilot jets clogged probably, but if the carbs were newly rebuilt, (assuming done correctly, which i know is a big assumption) could the stator have something to do with only running at high RPMs? cause thats what his grandpa thinks is wrong is that the stator is bad, but ive never heard of a stator causing low rpm problems.

check the carb out good, and I'd run a check on both spark and compressin while I'm at it.  2 stroke singles like good healthy compression to run right, and like ALL motors, they like good strong ignitions and enough fuel.

Worth replacing crank seals when doing a top end rebuild on a 2stroke,like bobthebiker said compression is vital.

If it was running OK before the carb rebuild, and now its not, then there are absolutely no prizes for guessing where the problem lies.

i dont know if it was or not, its my friend's bike, and i was thinking the same thing as all of you, carb problem most likely clogged pilot, but his grandpa thought it was a bad stator. so i was wondering if there is any way dieing at low rpms could have something to do with the stator and i now know that they are not connected in any way. so i told the kid to bring the carb to school tommarow and id do it up right

bobthebiker

I've never seen a bad stator cause a bike to die at low rpm,   so I'm going to definitely say carb is the problem.
