Tank Pads

So, what do you guys think about them?  How much would you spend on one?  Does anyone own one?  Have and pictures?  All of this snow and riding withdrawals are driving me insane.

i have one one my 06 500f   looks good  ill try to take a picture tomorrow   i wear large belt buckles so i know it will save my paint

I don't have one. Nor can I bring myself to get one for the price they are here.

Down here, the Tank Protectors are $30 and up. Some hover around the $50 and are just a plain color!. I look at it and all I see is some cheap ass plastic with some adhesive on it - something which should sell for like $10 not $30 - and cannot bring myself to do it. And I wonder... why not some magnetic sheeting - like how some businesses give you their business card on magnet stuff, or a small yearly calendar on the same. But then I wonder if the slight magnetism might effect the boys. Can't this stuff be bought for printers to print on - magnetic sheeting?

3M sells some kind of Sheeting that goes on clear and can be removed and reapplied. And then I think... why can't I do the same with any clear and thin vinyl from the hardware store? It's what I use for under my tank bag so it could work for that as well. But haven't tried it out yet.

Clear Contact pops into my mind. BUT, I don't think I'd trust the adhesive used to not damage anything.

So.... my bike sites without a Tank Pad and I lose zero sleep over it.

Yeah, mine came on the bike it's a Harris. Has been on for two years that I know of and hasn't faded or anything! Around here they start from $10-$30 $30 for a custom one. I've seen them on ebay for like $5 can't you just get one of those Mister?

I think they help my .02 though.

between my belts and my zippers i found mine to be a necessity. it's saved my tank from many a scratch. forgot what site i picked it up from, but it only ran me about 15$

Not trying to be a jerk and I can't really talk cause there is one still on my SV but that warning sticker really detracts from your nice tank pad.

Hah, I guess I'm guilty of the warning sticker too.  It's been on there for 13 years, and I guess I'm just afraid it's going to leave some mark or take some of the clear coat or paint off. 

I'm thinking the only tank pad I'd get would be a magnetic one at this point.

They seem like a good idea what with jacket zippers and such.  The PO put one on my bike, so I didn't even know it wasn't standard for a while. They probably should be standard and $30 for one is kinda ridiculous.

MY only concern with a magnetic tank pad is the electromagnetism and its possible detrimental effects on the boys.

Only "magnetic field effects on testicals" thing I can find was done on rats. Didn't effect the sperm but it reduced testosterone levels. Of course, the amplitude of the magnetic field may be nowhere near that if some sheet magnet. But I don't know how much the sheets stuff is so cannot compare to the test.

I also hate paying for random little things like that which should only be $5 max. I bought a normal stick on once, but the edges would eventually curl up since I rode in so much rain. I eventually went the magnetic route. I went to Michaels(the craft store) and bought a roll of magnetic stuff. It was white on one side. I just traced my old tank pad on it a couple times and cut them out, then spray painted them with different designs on them. I think one had brass knuckles on it, another had a Crass symbol. I wasn't ever worried about the physical affects, since the magnet was pathetically weak, but I was always worried about it scratching/scuffing my tank from moving around a little all the time. I think it might've dulled it the slightest bit, but no where near what I could've done to it without any protection from zippers and everything else. I am sure that if you go to the hardware store or Michaels you could find some type of foam/rubber with a stick on back to just make your own. I haven't worried about it on the GS though.
