Trying out the radio at work

So I've got quite a selection of tapes at my desk, anything from Styx, to Springsteen, Rick Springfield, Journey, AC/DC, Huey Lewis. Basically enough stuff to rock out in my cubicle so it's possible to make it through the day. Well my tape player ate one of my Journey takes about 3 weeks ago and I've been too lazy to see if I can pull the cassette out without ruining the actual tape that's wound around one of the rollers.

I've been listening to the radio in the mean time, which I haven't done since about 8th grade, and I've gotta say it's pretty intense. Basically I listen to the same 5 songs over and over and over all day, apperantly the music industry feels that 2 hours is too much time for any one person to go without hearing lady gaga, I'm real tired of listening to kesha's white girl rapping.

There was no real point to this. but it's still 9am and the forums are pretty dead, so I figured I'd just start on a new topic.

As far as getting the cassette out you just have to open the deck and attempt the removal.  If it tears its likely trash, I have never been to good at splicing tapes smaller than VHS sized.  Even then the area where the splice is will be trash so at best you are losing a little of whatever was playing when you deck got hungry.

Radio, i hear your pain.  Pop stations are the worst but even the classic rock stations around here get repetitive quickly.

I just haven't pulled it out because the last time I had this happen, I stuck another tape in, and the same thing happened instantly. This tape player is a bit newer though, so hopefully it isn't going bad already. I love 2 Michael Jackson tapes that day. It's hard to come back from a loss like that.

The Buddha

I have a cd 24 disk player that shows M error and eats disks. Its a fisher. Anyone know ?
Cool.

I heard of this new invention that came out a couple years back called the compact disc (CD for short).  Maybe you should invest in one of those.  :D

Yeah I stopped using cassettes and VHS a long time ago, I digitized what I had and stored the rest away, which later got tossed due to fire damage.  All it takes is a little crease in the tape and a deck that likes to eat things and your done.

Even CD are almost out dated.  Might as well just get a mp3 player or their are even some websites out there now where you can stream music for free if you have internet at your cubicle at work.

www.pandora.com

and i know their is another one out but can't think of the name but you basically put in songs you want to hear and it will keep playing music similar to what you typed in so you will get a good variety of music and you tell it whether or not you like the song and it will make more song choices based on that.  best of all it is free.

Tapes!?!?!?!? Welcome to like 1990!  If you have the internets just go to pandora or last.fm or probably all manner of sites and stream the musics.

Also, if you're getting lady gaga you're listening to the wrong radio station.  I can't imagine that there's not a classic rock station around, so at least it's Zepplin or something every 5 songs.

If you don't mind me asking, how old are you tt-four???  Even my 50 year old father has joined the 1990's and gotten a CD player

Depending on where he works those sites may be blocked so radio may be the only option.  A lot of employers lock down the Internet for productivities sake, even though Internet radio isn't a bad thing my eyes.

Haha, that's the plan. I listen to Pandora at home, but no luck here. As far as productivity does, they haven't blocked off this forum, or customfighters.com, so when you see me posting random stupid comments all day long, you'll know it's because they don't let me have access to ebay or internet games.

I'm 26, but I'm usually a good 10-15 years behind technology. That's one thing you need to fight to keep up with, and I just don't care enough to want to. I don't care to buy things that are just going to be outdated in a couple weeks, that's like buying nice clothes for a 1 year kid that's gonna outgrow them in 3 months. My dad still has his 8-track player in his garage. I have just as many records at home too, but I'm not lugging those to work. If you're gonna use that arguement.... They started putting fuel injection and electronic mapping in motorcycles 10+ years ago, isn't it about time you throw out your GS?? I'll take it at a discount when you do! Which brings me to my next point. Make fun of tapes and records all you want, but I have a number of music stores I can go to that sell plenty of good tapes and records for $.50-1.00 a piece, and they've still got plenty of life left on them. I own plenty of CDs, but it always feels like I listen to it 5 times and it starts skipping, and there's nothing more irritating to me than a skipping cd, and once one part of it starts skipping, the whole CD goes. At least if my tape or record acts weird in one spot, you just wait it out 2 seconds and you're back in business.

I used to download songs when I was younger, but I'm AWFUL at computers, and when I get a computer problem, I usually lose everything I have saved on my hard drive. I just give it to my computer friend to reformat and reload windows. That habit started when I bought my last computer and it came with a disc that you just put in the cd drive and restarted the computer and it would start you fresh, so downloading music would be a waste of time, because I'd just lose it all anyway. Aside from that I don't like music enough to run the risk of getting in trouble for illegally downloading free music, and there's no way I'm gonna be a sucker and pay $1 per song like you're supposed to for your ipod when I'm getting a whole album for that price. Plus there's no other media as durable as a cassette tape for your ability to toss it in a book bag on Friday, and know it's not going to be cracked/broken/water damaged by Sunday.

I like my toys simple. Air cooled motorcycles, bicycles with one gear, music you only need a start/stop/rew button to work, TV you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out, I've got TV channels I don't even know how to get to. My wife is always flipping to channels I didn't even know we had.

So basically, if you want the full list of simple life choices you'd probably find amusing..... I like cassette tapes/records, I own HUNDREDS of VHS tapes, all bought for no more than $1, and I own about 6 DVDs, we have cable but most of my TVs still have rabbit ears on them, my motorcycle is an air cooled 1992, although I have owned some newer ones. I'm in the market for a Buell XB(which is also air cooled enough though they're made from 2003-2010 and make less than 100hp), I ride a bicycle to work(although I work 1.5 miles from home and there's no parking, so that's just good logic). There are 3 mopeds in my basement, although that's mostly my wife's doing. I warm my food in a toaster oven because I don't trust the microwave, although we do own one. I wash dishes by hand, I pay most of my bills by check/mail, I don't own a cell phone, I play video games(Tourist Trophy!) on a PS2, which is obviously NOT hooked up to the internet, although I still have my sega genesis, an original nintendo, and my wife has a kalekovision(?) somewhere as well. I love to walk places(again, I live in the city, so it just makes good sense), I take the steps at work instead of the elevator. I've never owned a car, and when I'm going somewhere I get there via a map and common sense.

I mean that list could go on forever, but yes, I'm behind the times, and I'm still only 26, so imagine what kinda shape I'll be in when I'm 80 as far as technology goes. The important thing is that I won't have crotch cancer from keeping a cell phone in my pocket, I won't have a brain tumor from talking on a cell phone too much, and I'll still have a fully functioning body because I don't drive everywhere and ride elevators all day at work. At least you'll all be happy to know that I am NOT a hippy, so whoever suggested finding some Zepplin... Watch it!

No reason you can't stay in the 80's and keep using tapes...

As for radio repetitiveness, it's everywhere.  It matters not what you listen to.  Since radio stations are all owned by about 3 companies nowadays, you get the same repetitive formula whether you're listening to pop, rock, country, or jazz.  They get a new batch of songs about once a month.  Some are old, some are newer.  Then they play the piss out of them for a month.  Then the cycle repeats.

When you put a dozen guys with M.B.A.'s in a room, these are the ideas they come-up with.

I got my tape player working, but I'll admit I've still been listening to the radio about 50% of the time.
