wanting to finish the job with airfilter and jets.

lots of guys on here with lots of knowledge!

bike
2002 with vance&hines and ignition advanced.
valve clearance is within spec. and bike runs great.
i live in seattle, so my mean riding temp would be between 60 and 70 generally, but I do ride all year. and 500ft elevation, but ride in the mountains too.
lots of commuting, but also long rides and sporty riding.

wanting to confirm jetting and airfilter choice, after searching through the forums in great detail I THINK I want:

the K and N lunchbox filter, sounds like it will give the most airflow, and would be nice to get rid of the airbox!

I have seen 20 and 22.5 listed for the pilot, which one? and blead vs non-blead? what is that?

mids - 65

main 145 or 147.5, i have seen both.

3 turns and a washer or two. which size washer and how many?

i dont want to ruin the gas mileage, so dont want to run her rich.

good reliable place to order mikuni jets and the k&n?

thanks, i know there are already a ton of threads on this, but just want to confirm prior to getting the parts and doing the work.  :thumb:

That's the same setup I have, K&N lunchbox, V&H and the ignition advancer. To be honest I have no idea with the ignition advance does, it was on the bike when I bought it. The pipe is ungodly loud, so hopefully that's your thing, because I think mind is too loud, but again, it was on the bike when I bought it. The next bike I get will be much quieter.

Unfortunately I can't remember what size jets I have. I just had the carbs apart a week ago too, 135 pops in my head, but I could be completely wrong. I know plenty of people use 150s with that setup. I tried searching through old posts I made about jets and carbs, but I don't see anywhere that I wrote what I actually had in there. Swear it's 135 though.

I have v&H with lunch box and +6* timing on my 07 and am currently running 20-62.5-150 with one washer under the needle.

I originally had 20-62.5-147.5 with no washers and was running lean. How do I know I was running lean? I work at a race shop and have a dyno with a lambda probe for AFR. anyway with the 147.5 jets and no washers I was running approximately 15:1 at all revs. this is dangerously lean, like burn a piston lean. plus there was only a 2whp gain. So I put in 150 jets with one washer and that got it down to 13:1ish at most revs (stock afr is 13:1 dead flat) plus I gained 2.5ish more whp for a grand total of 43.5ish whp (stock is 39whp). those runs were with +5* degrees timing, so I added 1 more degree of advance (total of 6* over stock) and that bumped it up to 44whp (+0.5 more whp!)

Later this summer I plan on putting 22.5-65-152.5 with one washer and adding more timing (1 or 2 more degrees), I'm hoping for over 45whp!

all the above testing was done with regular gas and 1-heat-range-cooler-plugs (NGK Iridium DPR9EIX-9) on an 80 degree day in the shade with a fan on the bike.

P.S. I used 155 jets for a while but they were too rich

tt_four, i agree the pipe is loud, mine came with it on, but no mods on the intake side, so want to get that sorted. the pipe noise seems even louder with ear plugs, strangely.

but anyway,

silvertwin, some very good info! and i found another thread with the progression of your dyno runs etc, excellent. my timing is also currently advanced 6*(i slotted the timing backing plate so i can adjust), and all else between are two bikes would be the same, right? i dont think any engine, carb, etc stuff is different from the 02 to the 07, but i could be wrong.

great you have access to getting mix numbers, and a dyno! i definately dont want to run lean and hurt the bike.

do you know what the bleed vs not bleed type jet is? i have seen it mentioned for the pilot jet...

so, your setup sounds like it might be a very good place for me to start(20-62.5-150 1 washer) thanks! but of course i live in seattle, so its a bit colder most of the time. maybe i want 2 washers?

does your exhaust pop on throttling off from mid to high revs? i am hoping this work will solve that as well as give me power and efficiency.
thanks!

Give silent sport muffler packing a try.  It makes a noticable difference over the cheaper stuff and is the only thing that keeps me from ripping the muzzy off of my bike.

Sorry this has nothing to do with jetting but I'm bored.

cool, i will have a look at that stuff! at first i really loved the loudness of it, but on longer trips it gets annoying.

Can you even get a V&H ignition advance anymore?

No, but its very easy to advance your timing your self

I think the old 2 jet carbs used non-bleeds while the new 3 jet ones use bleed type, from my understanding the bleed (new) type flow alot more fuel with the same size hole. but dont quote me I might be bass-akwards. I got my jets from http://www.carbparts.com/mikuni/mikuni_tuning.htm
I just called them and they knew exactly what type of jets mine needed, plus they were cheap and sold individually.

I probably wouldn't put two washers under the needles because there will be alot of stress on the spring in there, it was hard enough with only one washer. if I was you ide run 20-65-150 or 152.5 and 1 washer with 3.5-4 turns out on the mix screws (I forgot to mention my mix screws are set to 3.75 turns out).

yes the exhaust pops slightly on decell but its less than my car  :thumb: and as far as efficiency I get 54-55 miles-per-gallon with an average of 30%city and 40%highway and 30% fullthrottle  :2guns:  :police: and thats with a 15t sprocket.

P.S. the $15, 15 tooth front sprocket made as much of an acceleration improvement as the entire $400 power mods put together. Best $15 ever spent on my bike.

thats great, thanks!

so i think i will do as you suggest, 20, 65, 150 with 1 washer and start around your 3.75 turns.  i will give carb parts a call. thats great you still get such good mileage, that is right around where mine is anyway, so if it doesn't change my commuting mileage (assuming I dont start riding really agressively with the massive(tongue in cheek) power gain) that would be great!

and yes, the DIY timing advance is really easy, and actually better in my opinion because you can tweak the advance.

black and silver twin, just to confirm your 6* advance is in addition to the 5* that is stock on the 01+ models? for a total of 11* btdc.  I currently have mine at approx 11* btdc.

thanks!

That is correct, I have +6* over stock, which is 5* at idle, for a total of 11* advance at idle. and 46* above 4000rpm. the stock curve is 5* from 0-1500rpm then it ramps up to 40* by 4000rpm and stays there all the way through redline. the new curve is 11* ramping to 46*
