So I rejetted my 2000 gs to the 40 125 as suggested and had it turned out to 3 1/8 turns and it was running pretty good. I recently bought an exhaust and lunchbox for it and just waiting for the jets to come in. Well I decided to just put the exhaust on to see how it would sound and to my surprise it works great and sounds great!  :woohoo: I didn't expect it to run right with the exhaust and not changing a thing else but it did! I have a flat spot of about 2800-3000 rpms but only notice if i go slow though that range.  Just wanted to share in case someone else wanted to get an exhaust but not any new air filter. Hope this helps. I wanted to put it onto the wiki page but its password protected so maybe someone else could if they feel like it.

It may seem as if its running right but it definately is running too lean. It probobly wont hurt any thing for a short while but leannes causes pistons to melt.

that flat spot @ 2800 is your engine starving for fuel. you don't -have- to install the K&N, as it only leans it out much more. the objective is getting smoother power, ridable power, not actually increasing the power output. you'll gain maybe 3 horses with all of it, lighter oil, etc

rejet proper with that pipe, and do plug chops. the v&h can run nicely, with linear power (for a gs) without damaging things :)

stock = fine, a little lean

v&h = a little louder, leaner

v& h + k&n = very very lean, louder still

rejet + V&V + filter = niceness.

A little louder?? My v&h is SO loud!

I only have 135 jets in my carbs, so your upjet previously isn't too far off. Once you get the proper size jets in there that flat spot should go away.

My V&H are just shy of obnoxiously loud  :tongue2:

oh mine's not shy of anything, I consider it full on obnoxious, and that's coming from the person on it, not someone on the sidewalk who has to listen to it and doesn't get the benefit of riding it. Once I get it out on the road I might not think it's as bad, but I'm still trying to fix it up so I can get it inspected and out for real rides, so currently all it gets to do is go for short rides around my neighborhood to test out my repairs. Riding around even at 4k rpm doesn't go along with me trying to be a good neighbor. I don't even want to try to remember what 10k rpm sounds like.

My V&H isn't that loud, untill the slides start to open then it gets real loud. But my car is loud too so maybe my gs is quiet(er) by comparison

You're more likely to burn the exhaust valves than to put holes in the piston crowns, but if you're REALLY unlucky, the super-heated valve heads will break off and punch through the superheated piston crowns on their way to the bottom of your crankcase, taking some of the piston crown material with them. Even worse, the superheated shrapnel could then weld itself to the crankshaft, complicating the repairs even more.

You might not believe that you need to rejet your carbs again, to compensate for the freer-flowing exhaust, or for a freer-flowing air filter, but you'd be wrong. Rejet again, or suffer the consequences of ignoring good advice.

Lastly, don't keep riding, thinking you'll just accelerate past the flat spot quickly; the engine is LEAN now, not only where you've noticed the flat spot, and you're heading for some REALLY expensive repairs if you keep running the engine without fixing the jetting problems.

Good luck; let us know if you have any questions about this.

thx for all the advice. I plan on rejetting as soon as my jets come in, I just found this to work pretty well. I have tried to  feel the flat spot a second time but haven't been able to feel it even when going slow through that range. It happened only once. I found that very strange. My jets should be in today or tomorrow  so I'll be no longer starving my bike once this happens. Thx again
