Has anyone tried to put a gas tank from a different bike that has a fuel gauge and that is a bit larger than a stock tank? I have a 2000 and I only get about 100 miles before I have to go to reserve and its so annoying having such low range. When I fill up I have to put in about 2 gallons so I'm getting about 50 miles per gallon. If anyone has a suggestion as a tank that could work i'm interested in trying it out.

If you have the small 3.5 gallon tank, just upgrade to a newer model 5 gallon tank.I have an o4 tank on my 89.No other tank will swap out without major surgery.

+1 to what Ben said.
New models have 5 gallons tank (4gallons in "ON" petcock position + 1gallon in "RES" position)

I also have a newer generation tank on my 1991 gs. It did a very nice job of making my bike look like it was from this century.

So the mount points on the new tanks are the same as the old?  How about the seat alignment?

The seat and tail are different. I had already replaced my seat and tail so swapping tanks didn't really matter. Just google a picture of the new and old GS and you'll see what's different between the two. You could probably make your old seat and tail work with a little bit of cutting and cleaning up, but you could also find a new seat and tail plastics and make those work as well.

Unmodified seat with an 04 tank on my 89.This was before I completely rebuilt and modded my bike.

So a new model gas tank will fit a 1992 GS without having to modify anything.  the 92 seat fits ok, just sticks up a bit wher the tank meets?  my 92 tank is leaking and i will need to do something soon.  If i get a new seat and tail fairing, do they line up with existing or do you have to modify them?

Thx for all the suggestions!   :thumb: Is the fuel sending the same on the newer models? Is it still just the two tubes on the petcock that uses a vacuum?

same two tubes on the bottom of the tank, but the petcock is new, much better in fact so NO fuel starvation occurs.
