Having installed multiple systems in multiple vehicles, i think i can offer some help.

As far as the number of subs you need, it's really a personal preference thing.  More subs = more bass, however more subs also = more amp power draw to push them.

Box shape and size also plays a part. Research them and figure out what you are looking for. The sound difference between ported, sealed and bandpass boxes is not drastic, but it is noticible.

If all you are looking for is MORE bass than stock then I would say that a single 10" or 12" sub-woofer is sufficient.  What you don't want to do is add too much power draw from the amps and blow up alternators.  I had a Ranger with a 40-amp alternator and didn't know any better.  I put 4 - 12" subs in the back of the cab running off 2 - 1000 watt sub amps.. took me 3 alternators to figure out why they were dying every 6 months..

In regards to having to amp your sub(s).. Yes.  You have to amp them.  Standard head units only push about 50-60 watts.  WAY too low to push a sub.  Even if it's a small amp (100+ watts) you'll still need it.  Make sure to check the power and ohm ratings of the subs you are planning to get and compare them to the amp.

to add on to what drunkmonkey said dual subwoofers are not really necessary depending on what kind of bass you are after.  In addition to which type of box you get for the subwoofer their is also a difference in sound between different size subwoofers.  A 10" has a punchier sound where as a 15" has a deeper more rumbly affect, and a 12" is in between.  I personally always had 1-15" with a 400 watt amp and felt that it was plenty of bass.  My one friend had 2-12" with 1000 watt amp and i could push out just about as much bass as him.

I also had a friend who ran 8-12" subs in the bed of his pickup truck but also had 6 batteries in the bed of the truck to power them and would have to charge them on a battery charger at a house to be able to recharge them.  That was just insane and extreme overkill.
