UMM, My bike seems to have some non stock stuff on it. Don't all GS's have a lil dial settin on the front brake 1 thru 4? Ya kno? Its a round lil turnable dial? Hmm...

Both my '96 and my '99 have the "round lil turnable dial" you mentioned.  But it doesn't adjust the "bite" of the brakes.  What it does is adjust the distance between the handlebar grip and the brake lever.

I used a ruler to measure what kind of a difference a one-stop change made.  If I remember right, it was about 1/8" per stop.  The only thing I can't remember is whether 1 or 4 gives the greatest gap between grip and lever.

Adjust to where it feels good.  Big hands = bigger gap, small hands = smaller gap.

Oh, and if the bike "lunges forward" when you grab a handful of brake, consider investing in a pair of Progressive fork springs (if you haven't already).  The stock springs are amazingly wimpy, and the beefier Progressive springs will go a long way toward eliminating that "lunge".

The dial you talk about is just so you can position the reach of the lever so if you had small hands you might want the lever a bit closer to the bars and if you have big hands you might want them not as close.

You might not be able to get the back end off the ground because you are not appling the brakes just the right way.  Also if the brakes are cold and you are attemping an endo it will not happen as easy as when they are a bit warm.  Your tire might not want bite when cold also.

If you do decide to install new pads look at the EBC double-H pads as they will do what you want and also look into stainless or kevlar barke line replacement on the front since this will give you a better feel fro the brakes and allow for the brakes to work beeter than the stock rubber hose.

If you bike is a few years old you might want to replace the brake line anyway just to be safe.

Ahhhh,
Ok thanks for clearing that up. Weird thing tho is mines a 93' not a 96' or 99'. I need to post a pic of my bike so ya'll can tell me what kinda stuff I have on it? Apparently the previous owner make a few mods to it. I'll look at those pads this weekend.
Thanks,

Maybe we should go for a show of hands here.

Does anybody NOT have one of these round, numbered, adjustment doohickeys on their front brake lever?

I don't - but I think that's because my bike was crashed before I got it and the PO just mounted whatever would fit.  My bike's a 1990...

I'd like to get adjustable levers for both clutch and brake if anyone has an extra one they wanna part with for VERY cheap (very cheap meaning cost of shipping and a strong THANK YOU!!!). (SInce my wife has smaller hands I thought it would be nice if she could ride the GS if the mood struck her...)

OK I dont... and count that as 3 hands... one for my 89, one for my 91 and one for the 90 I sold back in 2000.
The levers are also pricier... The old style is $7, the new one is ~$19... but used levers are all the same $2 at the place I used to go to. Also My levers are black after updating... just like yours but black.
Cool.
