Rejetting Issues - Pilot Jet Stripped (solved: used extractor)

So I just received my rejet kit from Buddha.  I had everything apart a couple weeks ago to clean and prep for the kit, now just got to putting the new jets in and I come to find out someone has already been in the carbs (well I guess it is expected as there are 17,000 miles on it when I got it) and stripped the heads of both pilot jets.  Any tips on getting them out?  I was thinking of drilling them out, but I couldn't really retap it.  I've heard of left-hand drill bits, where do you pick those up?  Sears?

On a side note, anyone know why Buddha throws in 4 allen head screws with the jet kits??

Can't remember if the bike is in my signature but its a 1993, mostly stock wiht about 17,000 miles but got some mods coming this year.

You can pick up the left hand bits at sears, or home depot, pretty much anywhere. The two most common types are round with larger backwards threads, that almost look like a big screw. The other are square, with a little tooth down the one side. You'll just have to be very careful since the jet is brass and I'm not sure how well the bit will grab it before it just tears it apart. Try googling the phrase "easy out".

The 4 allen head bolts are to replace the 4 screws that were holding your float bowls on. They strip out ridiculously easy, so it's easier just to replace them with the bolts.

How stripped are your jets? Is there still a slow for a screwdriver, or is it completely flat? I'd be tempted to say the first thing I would try is taking a screwdriver with a decently sharp tip and tapping it with a hammer. Since the jet is only brass you may be able to get the screwdriver to grab the jet well enough to pull it out. Keep in mind I said tap, not hit.

They aren't completely stripped, still have an edge to tighten them.  The price of the extractor kit isn't horrible, but I may try to find a file and sharpen up one of my screw drivers and try the "tapping" method first.  Thanks for the tips... hope I dont screw this up...

Do you have room to get on them with a small Vice-Grip to break them loose?

Its the pilot jets, so they are deep down in a hole...  I didn't want to get too aggressive with it, but then again there are not many tools that will fit down in the hole.

Update

Tapping of the screw driver didn't work.  Maybe a defective screw driver  :cookoo: just not getting get anything to grab.  I have the jets soaking in some oil as I wait for an extractor kit to arrive.

This happened to me as well. I ended up using a drill bit smaller than the pilot jet hole to drill into the pilot jet itself. Was able to tap an extractor into the pilot jet, and unscrew it.

Drilled and extracted the jets - took some courage to stick the drill bit into my carb but it worked out.  Everything went back together just fine although its almost time for a new o-ring kit.  Had some problems starting, but just a quick spray of starting fluid and everythings up and running.   :woohoo:

Dialed in the idle, and seems nearly perfect (ever so slight hang coming back down to idle).  FYI I am running 40 pilot, 150 mains, 1 washer, 3 turns with a full Jardine RT1 exhaust and K&N lunchbox.  Thanks for the help.

Ok... so now we have to get my gs running just right! Its got the great throttle hang at 4-5k. Super fun.

Bike is a whole different machine after the re-jet, starts with just a tap of the starter, warms up in half the time, and much smoother power band.  Now why didn't I do this last year?  Although it feels as though I got bit by the mod-bug, what do I want to upgrade/swap out next....

I am thinking some GSXR pegs, led brake/tail with R1 lens, 1/5 throttle with new grips, up the fork weight and pair it with my katana rear shock sitting on the shelf... hmm so many good ideas on the forum.

Repaint and wheel stripping this planned for this winter now that grad school is over.
