my bike is littered with surface rust and i want to try and clean it up a bit. i cant afford to strip the bike and have it cleaned up (mediablast?) because im a broke college student and it's my only form of transportation to work and school  :icon_neutral:

anyone have any preferences towards specific rust removal products and tips on how to keep it low impact? i want to avoid having to repaint the frame, though  it seems inevitable.

any hints?

If this freshershest-thread-ever gets spoiled by petty fighting, I'm gonna be so mad.

Naval Jelly (which is phosphoric acid or something) will get your rust off without stripping the entire frame down, but isn't paint friendly so you'll be repainting anything beyond the rust spot that you get it on.

Could go with a rust covering rattle can or touch up.

i'd like to get as much of the rust off as possible, and not just mask it. what color does por-15 set to?

Jasco Prep and Prime takes out rust very well (gotta scrub/brush it a litte..) it's not very friendly with clear coat.. but wont eat paint unless you scrub it.
You should be able to pick it up at any paint store (Dunn Edwards, etc)

I have had some success treating light surface rust with a product called Iron Out.  not sure what it's made of, but it is a powder that disolves rust by either dumping it on a damp cloth and rubbing it on the rusty item, or soaking the item in a solution of water and Iron Out.
