And had to coast into gas station. Perfect timing on running dry.

Switched to reserve and it didn't help. Shook bike side to side and get another half mile, about 5 times.

Printed gas line diagram, lets go see what I did wrong last winter.

you have the reserve and main lines from the tank backwards

On my GS500F whenever I take off the tank...all I have to remember is the hose that is on the REAR of the petcock goes to the fitting on the FRONT of the tank  :cheers:

I've been pretty lucky as far as running out of gas. One time I ran out of gas as I was pulling into the gas station, and just coasted up to the pump. Another time my gas ran out of gas as I tipped it over onto the sidestand at the pump. This last time I ran out of gas half a mile from home, but I rocked it back and forth, and got just far enough to have it die again close enough for me to coast home. I will say though that one time I did run out of gas at a redlight in the middle of the road, had to push my bike back up hill a little, and then walk a mile or so to the gas station in the rain, then back to my bike. What a pain.

Does your bike have a Reserve? Cause once I go to reserve I start looking for a gas station, riding a MC to me does not mean becoming a pedestrian  :nono:

All the of the ones listed were on my last bike, which had a fuel light, that I obviously didn't pay enough attention to. The last time it happened, which is when I ran out close to home, and rocked the bike back and forth to get home, was when I was just getting my bike running, so I only had a gallon in the tank so it'd be easier to put on and off the bike. I also had it on PRI, and just forgot that I didn't have a full tank. I plan to avoid the situation from here.

That statement assumes the petcock was put in the tank correctly, it can fit either direction.  A better statement would be the longer fitting on the tank pet chicken goes to the rear of the frame petcock.

So the good news is I'm getting 60 mpg.

Thanks for suggestions and diagrams. Already pulled them. 

I remember triple checking the lines before snugging tank down. Im sure I had it wrong now. I htink petcock will check out OK since it operates from right side with screwdriver.

I might get to fix it tomorrow. Boston is without drinking water. I am waiting for "business shut down" call.

I could see where buying a used bike can have issues in this aspect then. When I was a pro wrench far too much of my time was spent undoing things done by people that thought they knew what they where doing.

I had a customer at my last job that I always looked forward to seeing just to see what he had messed up. Normally I am annoyed when I have to go and fix what someone else had attempted to repair but this guy really had the worst King Midas touch I've ever seen.  He decided the best approach to accessing a broken inner door handle was to cut a section off the top of the door panel!  He came back a few months later with a broken power window in the same door.  When I took it apart I found a bunch of maps and carry out menus!  I guess if you cut a giant hole in your door panel the only logical thing to do is fill it up with maps and menus   :laugh:  His best was the time he decided to change the burned out bulb in the gear indicator on his center console mounted console gear selector.  The $2 bulb turned into a $400 shifter once he was done with it.  How I miss you Salvador...
