GS Toasted?

Quick background, my motorcycle has been struck by cars twice. The side in question has been struck by a car once, and hit the ground after being struck by another car at a later date. Been treating me well for a while since the last bang. Search the forums if you actually care.

Another side note, the way the rotor and starter clutch is attached on the 07 model is different from the previous models. No need for a flywheel puller. Its just a single 18mm bolt making for an easy rotor removal.

A week ago i hit the starter button, and i could hear the gears just whirring. Sounded like a remote control car. A search of the forums lead me to believe it was a problem with the start clutch. I drained the oil and opened it up, to find the rotor bolt had worked itself out. Easy fix i thought. I went ahead and reviewed the springs and drums in the starter clutch while i was at it. All was well. I reassembled everything, went to start it, and after a brief crank, it failed again.  >:( Pulled it apart, torqued it to 100nm or so, reassembled, and drove it for 3 days. Failed again.

I pulled it all back apart, used loctite, and reassembled. Let the loctite set for 48 hours. It worked for 1 start, then failed when i tried to go home from work. As there is a bike shop on the corner of the block where i work, i pushed it up the hill and told them my problems.

Seems the threading inside the crankshaft that the bolt screws into is smashed in, and the crankshaft spins a bit  whompy, presumably due to being banged on via car. Its taken a few months for it to fail, but it has.

If i had the shop repair it all correctly, its going to cost far more than the machine is worth. Shop is going to try to patch it with some sort of uber loctite red type of thread welding compound (only charging me for an hour of labor which i expected anyway), but says it may not make it off the lot, may make it 3 days, may make it a few months, but will fail again.  Hopefully it will start so i can drive it home.

Any one know if its really worth the time, effort, and money to source the parts and rebuild the engine? If so, how many hours am i looking at? Things need to happen in a quick time frame as i have no other vehicle.

Is buying the yamaha r6s i really want and parting out the good stuff left on the gs the most logical option?

if you are parting it out, I am looking to buy the front brake lights switch if you will sell it.

I guess the practical options are:
1. Part it out
2. Buy a used motor, and have lots of good spare parts to keep it going.

Option 2 makes sense if you intend keeping it, if you want the R6 I'd guess you'd do as well financially to part it out as you would buying a motor and selling the bike. It may not be easy to find a buyer who is interested in a bike with a spare motor with a bent crank!

I would always encourage you to buy a new crank and tear the motor apart yourself. If it goes back together, awesome, and you learned a ton about the inside of your motor. If it doesn't, just part it out and buy an R6.

If you're main concern is getting it home, you could always bump start it, then try the actual starter at home. You could also try some JB weld on that bolt instead of the red locktite.

If you do part it out, can I have that little oval cover with the two bolts that goes on the sprocket cover?? It's the one you remove to mess with that screw for the clutch.

Have a shop spray it all clean with parts cleaner, tighten the bolt and mig weld the head of the bolt down. Should be cheap enough and you can ride for a while.

I thought about saying you could weld it in there, but I'm not sure how it would work. I'm not sure what the part we're talking about looks like without seeing a picture, but I'd assume it's the crankshaft, the flywheel, and then the bolt. If the face of the bolt is actually up against the flywheel, it might be too hard to try to actually weld the bolt to the crankshaft for it to do anything. If you tighten the bolt and then weld it to the flywheel it might help keep it from spinning off, but I'm not sure about the whole situation.

respite

Well i got the machine back, and its started 6 times so far, but its doomed to fail. I dont have the time or a place to do an engine rebuild even if i could find an 07 crankshaft at a salvage yard.

While I know i can make far more money by parting it out, i rather just sell it as a "project bike".

Its an 07, salvage title, cracked right fairing around a mounting bracket, 16,000 miles, kat shock, progressive springs, custom bars, gsxr turn signals, rejetted for a k&n drop in, 4000 miles on current set of bt-45's, less than 1000 on a nice did xring chain with new sprocket set to match. Oil changed every 3000 miles, all maintenance done with love, and the major things documented. Bike runs great, but that bolt will work itself out.

Can anyone suggest what a fair asking price would be?
