My friend and I were welding up an engine cage for my bike, and I DID disconnect the ground on the battery, but one of the kids in my class was playing tom foolery on me and reconnected it while i was welding, and then awesomeness happened. KA BLOOM WENT THE HYDROGEN!!!! i heard and looked up thinking the russians were coming, but i was safe. anyway, the battery blew, one of the red refill caps shot off, and the whole top black plastice peice that is fused to the clear plastic shot up on three sides. so i admired the sweet explosioin, thanked God no one got hurt, pulled the battery out, and checked voltage just for kicks.  13.2 volts.  i sealed the plastic peice back on with some silly con, and finished welding......wait, here comes the best part, got done welding put the battery back in the bike and it started right up. didnt need a jump, didnt need to charge the batt. and didnt need to pop start.......awesome was my thought.

Wow!  Glad to hear nobody was hurt and you still had a usable battery.  What did you do to the kid who reconnected the battery?

so what you're saying, is the next time someone's battery dies they should just turn on the welder and fire it up?

yea but then i just found out today, the battery sucks. i pulled it off the charger, went to start up the bike crank crank ugghgh. no power left. so i had to grab another batt. right quick to fire it up, but then i was riding around abot 15 minuetes, shut it off for about 3, and it started right back up again. i guess since it was such a short period of time that it was off, and the engine was already warm it was able to start no problem. but im gonna go to wal-mart and change it out for free anyway so no worries.
