Please help - bike loses power when starting in 1st gear

I tried searching previous posts for this problem, but I haven't been able to find much on this... any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recently bought a used '96 GS500.  I believe that everything is stock on the bike.   The bike starts up fine, but when I try to get it started from a standstill, the engine loses a lot of power.  When I roll the throttle while holding in the clutch, it seems to hesitate for a moment or two before the engine revs up.  And then, when I try to release the clutch to put the bike into first gear after getting to about 3K RPM, the RPMs quickly drop off and I end up moving really slowly.  The only way to compensate for this seems to be revving the bike up past 5K, and rolling on the throttle as I release the clutch.  Has anyone else encountered this problem, and have any recommendations?  Thanks for your help!

Yup its a feature...
BTW you should have 4-5K on the tach before letting out the clutch... The reason for the glitch is a Lean pilot jet. Put in 40's and it should behave. Just 1 bike in the 8 I have jetted didn't show that tendency.

Thanks for the advice, seshadri... quick followup question... if I'm rejetting, how many mains and how many pilots do I need?  I don't see any mention of quantity in other rejetting posts, and looking on bikebandit.com the jets come in packs of 5 in varying sizes.

You'll need 2 mains and 2pilots and a pack of washers .... and cycle gear sells them in So Cal area .. No reason to buy 5 from bandit... Washers... Hobby shops or Radio shack sells like 10 for a buck ...
