carhartt double fronts work good! 12 oz canvas, and the black is really sharp looking. You can slip pads into the knee area, but I prefer the kind that velcro to the knee. I guess you could sew pockets in for hip and butt bone protection. I just wear knox armored shorts.

I was going to suggest Carhartts too. They even had an article about them in Motorcyclist pretty sure that is the mag.

Thanks.  All this information is very good.

I am a little demotivated though, because it seems so hard to find casual clothes which are strong enough in the event of abrasion on the road and now my idea doesn't seem so good.

It seems to I could deal easily with impact in terms of stitching padding in, but the injuries would come from denim being ripped.  I wonder if anyone has links to the most common areas of friction injuries?  I am now thinking I could double-up on thick denim/other material on the inside of jeans/jacket in those specific locations and reinforce existing stitching from the manufacturer with extra stitching, for example.
