Hey guys.  Removed the clutch cover to fix a leaky gasket.  Used Threebond 1194 since I didn't have a new gasket handy. Anyway, started to ride to work this morning and the shifter was very stiff.  Turned back around and parked it.  The shifter has tension on it and doesn't spring back after a shift.  It'll run through the gears (tested it on the centerstand). Clutch is working fine and feels no different.  Wondering if the paper gasket provides some additional clearance and now the cover is putting pressure on something.  Any ideas??????

Thanks.

Don't know how to fix your problem. My shifter seems a little sticky as well actually but that cartoon is hilarious!

Looks like you're getting a lot of help............

I haven't pulled a GS apart (yet!) but I wouldn't be surprised if your theory is correct and you need the clearance provided by the paper gasket. Likely its causing the shift drum to bind. You could check by leaning the bike over so you don't lose the new oil, loosen the cover screws and pull it out a little, then check the shift action. If it moves easily, you can then:
1. Get the right gasket, or
2. Get a sheet of thin cardboard (a folder?) and cut one out.
3. Re-use the old one if its not badly ripped, with sealant.

Hey Mole, that's the kinda advice I'm looking for.  Thanks.  :thumb:

are you referring to the little cover where the clutch cable goes, on the left side of the bike?  if so there isn't supposed to be a gasket there, sometimes oring like to fall off of the chain, and one may have gotten stuck in the hole where the shifter shaft comes out, preventing it from working properly, and moving freely

Actually it's the clutch cover on the right side.  Thanks anyway.

The clutch on my GS appears to be on the left as far as I can tell, but see the pic below. :icon_question:  :dunno_black:

Hey Jim, maybe you're looking at it in a mirror?
The clutch cable connects to the actuator thingy on the left side, the push rod goes through the gearbox and actuates the clutch which is on the right side. Most bikes are set up like this. :thumb:
By the way, I like the rabbit!

Is that when you are looking at it from the front, or the back?  ;)

OOOH!! Your talking about on the engine????  :o

By the way, can anyone tell me in real simple language, how to get it it into reverse? I just can't seem to figure it out.  :cookoo:

I stole the rabbit from someone on here a few years ago I think. :dunno_black:

(Sorry, couldn't resist, I'll stop hijacking your thread now.  )

Its easy, you just run your chain around the sprockets in a 'figure-of-eight'.

Alright, took the cover off today and as soon as I loosened the bolts the shifter loosened as well.  Looks like the boss on the inside of the cover is touching part of the shifter assembly.  Need the clutch cover gasket after all to add some clearance.

Thanks for the replies.
