ok just tore the top end off the engine  on the GS with no title i got.  well, it wasnt rebuilt, it was torn down, cleaned and reassembled with (get this) not new gaskets for head and cyl base, but old gaskets with RED HIGH TEMP RTV, and the rings are stuck,  THEN, my day went to hell, there was a BIG friggen spider hiding behind the ingnition cover, dont know what species it was, but it waved to me in thanks for opening the sidecover before making the fatal mistake of jumping on me to give me a hug.  ( yes, im an aracnidbigot. i have little white hoods with matching sheets, aswell as premade popcycle stick crosses for which to burn when on a rally for the 8 legged critters)  the thorax on the damn thing was the size of a quartar. im guessing this thing climbed in and ate other bugs that happen to wander into its hold, till it got alittle too big to get out, found moltings inthere too.   there was a beautyful service held for it, the sunsentinal newspaper even covered the event (and victom)
still cant get my wife to stop laughing over the vision of her 6' 250 lb Big bad Harley biker lookin husband dancing around trying to ditch the insect from hell off of his shirt without beating himself todeath with the tools in his hands. once the rolling roars of uncontroled Mirth ceased, she attempts to ask me through her tears," Are you ok? "  " yeah im ok"  ( just as soon as i unfurl my skirt, its riding up abit.)  she quips back "My hero" and proceeds into a second round of simian matting calls while clutching her gut.   (grrrr)   now really, i can handle most critters with Abit of warning. i see a spider i know he is there, chances are it will live, but something gets the jump on me, well, not likly to get too many more breaths of this atmosphere.   back to engine,  pistons are clean as whistle aside from stuck rings, but have some scratches, cylenders seem to have some pitting, the BACK side of the Cam lobe on #2 intake appears scored but not the high end. guessing valve floating abit. the bearing surfaces on same cam is chewed too.  now, i had a GS450 siting on bench next to the 500, the CAM markings are the same, IN EX  450  ect, they look like identical CAMS.  now i know that the valves are same size, the 450's Combustion chamber is not as tight, but layout is still same. intake ports look same, but exhaust ports are angled twards frame. im wondering if Cams arent the same profile, lift and duration.   i think, im going to tear this engine down completly and just go through every inch.   dont know if i can save the stock bore of cyl, dont know what the cut off point for pitting is.

anyone find a cheap source for piston rings, head gasket, and valve stem seals?

Oh man I have not laughed that hard in awhile, Thanks Blueknyt.  But as far a spiders go, most people I know have a fear of them.  Look at the movies arachnophobia, 8 legged freaks.  My roomie still can watch those movies.  But that is getting way OT.  I know I have seen gasket sets on ebay a couple times.  And trust me the $58 is not bad.  I called around in my area and was not able to get a set like that(Each gasket is seperate)  So it might be something you want to check into.

Gaskets... try partsnmore.com, the rest... try APE. #2 intake cam had some scratches... I wonder if my 89 was owned/worked on by the same bone head. It also has the same crows feet type marks on its #2 intake. I thought it was due to turning the motor over without a shim in the bucket or some other screwdriver related mishap. Vlave float... I didn't think so... Cos if you think about it float is when on the closing side the shim loses contact with the cam as its still opening. The spring will make it slam back into the ports but wont make contact with the cam (atleast not usually).
Cool.

well, would seem there is alittle silver in this cloud i have found, working on spliting the cases, but inspecting the cly, i had a loose stock piston and dropped it in the cyl, and man, what a gap the rings had to fill, kinda freaked me for a bit. went back to work on cases, wiped some smeg off the pistons still on crank, and i noticed they were nice and clean, barley used, and had 1.0 stamped on them, thought this abit odd,  grabed the stock piston held it next to it, and it was bigger, 1mm from looks of it. so it would seem this engine had some work to it.  im still spliting the cases and gonna inspect the bearings, aswell as clean off all that RTV and use 1104 compound (like yamabond) on cases. perhaps do alittle trim work to gear dogs on tranny. was thinking of shiming oil press reliefe valve for a few extra psi just for good mesure. WISH I HAD A WORKING DIGITAL CAMERA i would love to do a writeup on this project , a howto.  anyone wish to donate one to the cause?

You can get a cheap digital cam for less than $75.
You don't need mega pixels for web images.

heheh, if i had the 75$ i would have my katana 600 forks, front brake rotor and carb parts too. think i might even have a generic sport fairing, or forsakeing all that and using it as a deposit on a titled GS frame. sigh...
