Today I was checking valve clearance when a friend noticed that one of the pieces that holds down the intake cam-shaft has a nice crack in it. Now I'm on the market for an uncracked one.

It is the right side intake cam retainer on a 1995 GS500e, labeled "D".
If anyone has an extra lying around shoot me pm.
Thanks!!

thats going to be a head replacement. those cam caps are machined with the head at the factory. the journals and oil passages wont match up. but you can always try.
Grumble : Grumble . . . . . . .

I've got a cylinder head where the SPO (Stupid Previous Owner) put the caps on wrong and ran it for a dozen miles or so, enough to glaze the bearing surfaces a bit.  Your'e more than welcome to try the caps from it.  One is bad but the other three aren't horrible.  Might be better than nothing.

That (replacing the head) sounds less than ideal. I work at a company with an experienced machine shop staff. Is it possible to have the piece welded together? Or maybe JB weld? Could some clever work with a replacement cap duplicate the original?

I would say its not impossible to machine it if you had the time and the resources.
Essentially go about it backwards. Machine the oil passage, then the pillow block. Then the bolt holes, which actually can have a wee bit of over size to them, the locating dowels will take care of that. Then the locating dowel reliefs. Then the cam cover bolt hole.
If you messed up by under 3 thou, machine/mill it a wee bit till its centered, but the block is larger size, and you can coat it with a oleophilic moly-teflon coating.

So I've still got a dead bike. this is my life project.

Anyway I have a 1995 GS500e, with the cracked bearing cap mentioned above.  I am going to try to defy nature and make progress on the project.  I am looking to buy a new cylinder head, and have found a possible match.  It is from a 1989.

Should I take a risk for $125?  will it fit?

Thanks for your sage advice.
