Hello everyone

First off i would just like to say "Hi" to eveyone. I am a new rider and brand new to this forum. I took the MSF course and loved it and recieved my liscence within a week :) I am now a proud owner of a brand new 09 GS500F. I am being safe and lovin the ride. I have a question that maybe some of you knowledgable folks can answer for me. I have three screws on the front windscreen one is missing :( im thinking maybe It must have been loose and it dropped out somewhere. I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of screw it is. It doesent look like it could be threaded. Does anyone know where i can get another screw does it have to be specific??

thank you all very much
Kris

Hello and welcome.

My 02 gs5 does not have a windshield so I can not help with the screw size but I would like to point out the importance of regularly checking the tightness of the hardware on your bike.

In the past three months I have lost all four chrome handlebar bolt covers...one headlight bolt...and two of the lens covers (oil pressure and high beam).

I bought a replacement metric headlight bolt at Home Depot by comparing it with the other headlight bolt. The chrome handlebar bolt covers were bound to fall off eventually. Losing the two lens covers really, really sucked. They are currently being substituted with red electrical tape until I can find a suitable substitute.

I recently lost a screw from my chain guard.... damn parallel twins and their vibrations!!

#6 = Nut (Part #7226529-001)

I had to replace one and my local Suzuki shop had some. I'm not for sure what you can get at Home Depot but it would have been my second stop if the Suzuki shop could not help me out.

Take one of the screws out that match what you lost, take it to home depot and ask someone to help you match it.  Shouldn't cost you more than 10 cents!

Would i need to take the front windscreen off to install the screw, my guess it yes? if so how much is involved in that?

Take out the remaining screws in the windscreen (make sure you check the other side to). Careful though, I found they can strip pretty easy.

im sorry plewis im fairly new to bikes...humor me.. :) how many screws should there be im taking out in total? knowing me as a noob ill prob take things apart that dont need to come apart. I was looking at the front part on the backside of the windscreen it seems to me that i would have to take off much of the front to even get the the nuts on the screws?

You said you just bought the bike right!? Head back to the dealer and let them put a new screw in it for you!

kbark, a lot of us are new to bikes including myself :) No questions asked means no answer for you so please don't hesitate to ask anything. I just realized, after reading worms response, that you did buy new. Just go to the dealer and tell them to fix it. They should not have a problem doing so.

the problem is those stupid screws are plastic, yes plastic. they thread into a rubber sleeve with a brass grommet inside. if the rubber part is still there i would remove the other two plastic screws and go to a hardware store and get 3 stainless steel (to prevent rust) screws with the same thread and length.

If the rubber part is gone you will have two choices:
1 go to a hardware store and make something similar/better
2 order a new one

i took the bike down to the dealer they are going to order me to new screws. I cant believe how cheaply made the screws are being plastic and all.

thanks everyone for your advice!

Black the metal screws will not fit in those grommets tried several different kinds. I just went on Flea Bay and bought a bucket of Gs500 screws from a part out now I have a huge tin of every nut and bolt I could want. It was $20 with shipping but saved a lot of trips to the hardware store!

That windshield setup seems to be pretty bad on the F models.  I have been chasing around some pretty loud rattles coming from the windscreen since I got my 08 and those plastic screws really don't help.  I finally ended up wedging little pieces of rubber in the groove all the way around the windshield and a couple other places in the fairing to completely eliminate the buzzing i was getting around 5500rpm

I replaced mine with some standard metric screws from the hardware store along with rubber washers to keep the metal screws from scratching the windscreen. Sorry I don't remember the size of them.

I recently bout an '07 GS and its missing all 3 screws and bolts that hold the windshield on. will these parts work on the '07 as well?
