Passing switch?

What is it?

I have a 2009 GS500F. I just got the Haynes book. The electrical diagrams show a "passing switch". The book goes through '08 so it seems to have been eliminated on the 09's. It is shown for the K4-K6 models with a note that there were no changes from '06 to '08.

Just curious.

I believe it is a button in the front of your high-low beam switch that you can press to flash the car infront of you letting them know u are going to pass.  My gs does not have it, I would like to try and install one though.

They're more common in other countries, so places like europe might have one, and that's why it's in the manual, but none of the US GSs did. People in this country just get super pissed if you pull up right behind them and start flashing your high beams, myself included. I had one on my last bike, and all I ever used it for riding back streets at night when I knew cars were gonna be coming, I'd just hold the switch in with my index finger because it was quicker just to let go of it than it was to mess with the switch. It's also nice for if you want to tell someone at an intersection that they can go first.

The book did show the switch on the US electrical diagram for some models. Made me wonder.

Can anyone confirm this for me.

When I use my high beam, it appears to turn the low beam off when it turns high beam on.
When I use the passing switch, it just tuns high beam on, leaving the low beam on.
Would the extra current cause problems when used for sustained periods?

Looks Great!!!!   Where did you get it JB? How long did it take you to apply it? Did you use the guide on GStwins wiki?

yep when you drive in america, you've entered a void of all sensible driving etiquette. passing lanes do not exist. getting cut off happens every 2 mins. tailgating happens all the time. eating, drinking, talking on the cellphone, etc etc are all normal.  it's a shame if you like driving.

i grew up in america so i thought it was kinda normal until read about most other civilized countries. i hear you can get a ticket for driving too slow and tailgating in germany. same for japan i think.
