I have a pretty nasty oil leak. I recently changed the magneto gasket.. but I'm still leaking oil. Im assuming its the pushrod seal because I'm getting a small amount of oil on my rear tire which is being thrown by the chain.

I was wondering if I need to drain the oil before I pull this seal? and do I need to remove the pushrod or will the seal simply pull out?

clutch pushrod?
youll get oil out of there but if you can lean the bike over on its side you should be ok.

youll have to withdraw the rod but the seal should come out without too much trouble.

FreedomAlive

yeah the clutch pushrod. I dont have anything to lean it on.. guess ill drain the oil. is resetting the rod hard? I'm not even sure of its function! when I changed the other gasket.. it took me HOURS lol

T1z3R

its function is to transfer the action of the clutch lever to the clutch pressure plate.
it just pulls out and pushes back in again.

FreedomAlive

okay thanks, sounds easy enough. hopefully this is the seal that's leaking.. I just wanna get back to riding.

does the pushrod need any lube before I reset it?

FreedomAlive

is it a good idea to run the engine without the chain guard (or whatever that case is called) on to see where the oil may be coming from?

T1z3R

the cover that goes over your sprocket?
i call it a sprocket cover :)

make sure its clean in there and you should spot the leak easily after running the engine.

Have you been getting giddy with the chain lube lately?

Unless you are seeing a noticable drop in engine oil level I wouldnt be inclined to suspect the pushrod or output shaft seal has failed. Chain lube tends to fling off and collect in the area behind the cover and around the drive sprocket, when it drips off its easy to assume its engine oil and that a seal or gasket has failed.

I would say get the area cleaned off with degreaser and keep an eye on the oil level before assuming any seals need replacing  :thumb:

removed sprocket cover and started the bike. small leak coming from the side of the crank case... looks like ill have to do the gasket again. ill get some pictures up.. maybe theres some sort of sealant i can get?

FreedomAlive

the darker spot in the oil is actually part of the gasket poking out of the case. this is probably why its leaking... is there a way to seal with without having to do the whole gasket again?

TheRealSpinner

For a quick fix, I'd try to clean it off really well (use some good soap to really get all the oil off) and squirt some silicon over it.  If you get your hand  really soapy (palmoilve dish soam works well), you can push she silicon around without it sticking to your fingers.  Silicon takes a long time to cure though.

As far as leaving the sprocket cover off, you won't be able to use the clutch.  The push rod is actuated by a cam in the sprocket cover.  Theoretically, you could drive it (push starting the bike by powershifting into 2nd gear), and then continue to powershift, but I would no recommend it.  I would clean everything really well, drive for a bit with the cover on, then remove the cover again and see where the leak is coming from.

Sweet Jesus!  A picture!

Brand new leaky gasket.  Suck-fest.

T1z3R

i would treat the cause not the symptom.

in other words just replace the gasket rather than bodge it by sealing the leak.
its not that much work.

pandymai

the gasket could also be pinched and therefor damaged. new gasket PROPERLY installed will be your best bet.
rustbucket on wheels that go vroom vroom and stuff.
