riding down the highway, fuel goes out so i switch to reserve pop starts since im doin 70 and i keep goin, then i hear a ticking and the higher the RPMs the louder the ticking and knocking, cant hear a thing when it idles so i dont think i spun a bearing yet. pulled it apart tonight to find that one of the magnets in the generator had some chips broken off of it. a big old chip that had broken into smaller peices. i dont know how long it had been broken so im not sure how much metal has circulated threw the engine by now but im thinking alot.  basically i want to know what most of you would do from here.  I plan to disasemble the engine, split cases etc. and clean each peice individually to remove all metal bits.  also i need to know how to remove the generator housing. the circle peice that the magnets are glued to.  i got the center bolt out but cant get the housing out.  i took pics but havent uploaded them yet. if you really need em ill try to find the cable for the camera.

thanks,
greg

You still want that 14t?  Or would you just be happy to ride now, like I was telling you?

is it an actual chunk of magnet that has come off or just the epoxy coating?

it looks like a chunk of magnet broke off and then got ground down to tiny bits, cause theres a big gash missing but the biggest peice that ive pulled out is the size of a pin head

Buy a manual  :thumb:

yea i have the repair manual, i was wondering if theres an easy way to get it off without buying the "special tool". i was thinking get a really long bolt that fits into rotor and finding something to use as a slide.  that or welding a small bolt to a slide puller

right now repairing the bike isnt a huge deal. i know what im doing as far as cleaning and repairing, but does anybody have any suggestion as to how the magent could have been chipped just out of no where like it is?  i know pics will help and im trying to get em loaded but any thoughts would be nice cause i cant figure it out.  ps. before anyone asks, the stator coil is fine, no damage whatsoever.  (<-- is that suposed to be one word?)

I found a used genertor/ flywheel, whatever you want to call it on ebay, and it says it will fit any gs from 89- 96. do these people not know that the engine is the same engine for every year GS? or am I wrong abuout that?  (I know F models have an oil cooler, but thats the only differance for diff. bike right?)
