What bearings to buy?

I need to replace my main bearings but on the schematic is says theres for choices for my year. brown yellow black and green.  can someone tell me which number i need to order? http://www.bikebandit.com/1997-suzuki-motorcycle-gs500ev/o/m6057

also i need a good gasket kit.  id like it to include clucth cover gasket, oil pan gasket, exhaust gaskets and stator cover gasket.  if anyone knows of such a kit, or a site where i can buy them without having to pay boat loads of money for "genuine OEM parts" thatd be great.

EDIT: Ordered the kit from partsnmore.

bump: come on, someones gotta know where i can get the correct main bearings for the connecting rods

I think the color is indicative of size, so plastigauge whats there, and if clearance  is within spec, then order the same color you already have

Its nothing to do with year, its all to do with manufacturing tolerances. You have to cross reference the code letters on the back of the case in front of the rear wheel with the codes etched onto on the crank webs, same with the balance-shaft and big-ends.

Did yoiu ever buy a manual  :dunno_black:....its all in there.

Yeah, but manuals are so expensive, whereas engine parts are.....oh, right, I get it.

I have the electronic version.  and to respond to jeremy_nash because i dont know how to use 2 quotes, i dont know what color mine are cause they're silver and dont say on them what "color" they are.

ill look in the manual again and see if i can find it

found it in the manual the codes to specify which color to get. now i just need to borrow my teacher's plastigaue and wait for my new rods to come in.

I was referring to color as a sizing guide, but I think you picked up on that.  I personally havent cracked the cases open myself, cause I'm dreading it, and I know its gonna be bad!

I think the economic equation for this is the same as most other bikes.  It's usually not worth it.  It's cheaper and easier to find a good motor from a crashed bike and swap them out.  I admire that you want to fix your own engine, but if you don't hot-rod it in the process I think it's a waste of time, other than the educational aspect.  Since you're sweating over bearing sizes makes me suspect you're not up to it.  Was that a challenge?  It wasn't meant to be.  I would just do an engine swap.  Best of luck to you.

no this will be much cheaper than a used engine. it was just a spun bearing and broken magnet. got a used generator for 50 and a set of bearings is cheap.  i also ordered some rods for 25, and a 45 peice gasket set for like $60 i think it was. so in the end, with all new gaskets, new rods, new bearings and new (to me) generator,itll still be cheaper than buying a used engine.  and i wasnt sweating over it, its not that im not up to "challenge" if its considered a challenge at all, I was just asking if the colors corresponded to differant years or what. but once i found it in the manual i was good.  but yea i did look into the used engine route at first, but theres no way it'd be cheaper in this case. thanks for the input anyway though. I always appreciate when people actually respond with valid ideas rather than the occasional "man, you shouldn't do that" response.
