Ok...pretty frustrated here!

Got the 99 a few years back....hanging idle prob everyone seems to have...Bike went into storage for 5 years or so.

Got it back out and brought it back to life with a carb cleaning the other day.  I new the paper filter  was a wrap so I ditched it for a lunchbox.  Not so much for hp gain but for not wanting to buy any more filters.  I have ran them in my cars and don't notice much power diff etc.

Soooo, I have been reading through countless posts on rejetting, idle fix, flat spot, bog on 1/4 turn throttle snap...

I wanted to know what jets for K&N and stock pipe.  I found it on the Poor mans carb rejet matrix or something like that.

It calls for 40 pilots and 147.5 mains for the lunchbox and stock pipe but I am reading....no don't do it...Bad idea.

This bike was $800 so putting a can on it that is $300 is a bit hard to swallow...especially after $220 for tires last night....$45 for carb kits....etc.

What is the cheapest way to go without buying a pipe for this thing.  Drill the factory pipe out?  Anyone sell a slip on cheap....I mean cheap cheap.

If this bike was my 954 I would be more apt to drop some coin on it....but the fact remains that even on it's best day it really wasn't making a ton of power, pretty slow, suspension is crap....etc.

I am happy to be riding again as it has been a while but this thing may be a money pit when it's supposed to be reliable and inexpensive.

I looked up the jets through sudco and although they are supposed to be $2.30 each .... I find them for $5.68 and $3.68.....with a minimum of 4 each.  WTF?  No telling how long to ship them.

Sorry for the gripe....just want to ride again with a little less headache than I am having now.

BTW:  I know the rejet problem has been brought up a million times.....as is every other one I listed. >:(

if anything.. ask buddha. he'll sell you a jet kit for whatever setup you have. he charges about 25 bucks.
and as far as not rejetting for lunchbox and stock pipe: it's under the assumption that an aftermarket/modified pipe is in the works. so it's generally "best" to NOT rejet for only the filter since you'll have to rejet again for an aftermarket pipe. i dont believe there's any other reason.

Putting cheap parts on an $800 bike, comparing it to a squid-cycle... whatcha got to complain about?

I can see your point Homer but a $300 can or an $1100 full system is not something I would call cheap... It would be like putting a set of $2000 rims on a '77 Pinto.

The frustration is in the fact that this bike is still not running correctly despite dropping the cash on it and it still begs for more.  IE:  The tank rust, the need for another exhaust, the need for another shock.  I am trying to get it running right enough to ride and trust.  It would be nice to have a low maintenance bike around you could just hop on and ride that is efficient and cheap as hell to insure.  I bought this bike to be a starter bike for my wife.  She did learn to ride on it so it served its purpose there.

As far as being a "squid" I usually reserve that term for the 18 year old trying to pull little popcorn wheelies @ 110 on the freeway.  I have ridden for over 20 years... V45 Magna, Goldwing, CBR, KX.... Of all of the bikes I have not had one be as much of a PITA.

I know there is a lot of love for the GS on this forum and when I first saw it I thought......"Man, this MUST be something great to have this many followers.  My experience thus far has been the contrary.

Other than that....I have nothing to complain about.

Any replies about making the stock can less restrictive?  I already am aware of the need for back pressure and exhaust gas velocities do matter, so I am not looking for straight pipe solutions or big lawn mower sound.  If anyone has had success please advise.
