Left bar end coming off

So, I got this GS500, but the tip piece on the end of the left handlebar is coming off. You gotta like keep it pushed in there, but with vibration it gradually starts coming out, so you gotta keep pushing it back in. The screw on it just doesnt go into anything inside the handlebar. Thoughts?

On mine, it screwed into a metal slug that was welded into the handlebars.  You don't need the bar end weights, though you might get more handlebar vibration.  Some other people have had good results filling the handlebar with BB's and capping the ends.

The screw doesn't really go into anything.
The chunk of rubber between the 2 nuts will get compressed when you tighten the screw. as it compresses, it spreads out and holds the bar end in place. Sometimes you need to get it sort of tight then shove it in and tighten the screw once shoved in. If there isn't some compression of the rubber already, tightening the screw just spins everything.
You might post a picture of what you've got. Maybe you're missing the end screw or something else.

If the rubber is old and hard, it won't compress well. Get new rubber from your local dealer or somewhere else.

Buy an extra 2 rubber bushings and then head down to the local hardware store and get a longer bolt. I only found them in a different thread so had to change the nut also. 2 bushings keeps it from pulling loose, also gives a tad better damping.

The screws are probably metric. But anything that fits would work. The nuts have bumps on them so they grip the rubber, but you could probably use star washers if the nuts you use are smooth.

yeah, it's missing the end nut. i'll see what i can get at the hardware store to fix it.

The end nuts might have come off and be inside the handle bars. Stick something flexible in there with a magnet and see if you pull out any nuts.
