looking for some quick ideas for a paint scheme on the GS. Silver frame now. black motor, white wheels...
Wheels will stay white.

was thinking charcol (sp?) frame...
I have some carbon fiber bit on it.

Go all black -- black motor, black frame, black tank and plastics.  If you want to get crazy, do some white highlights on the tank, maybe a rally stripe.

yea, regual Krylon flat black on krylon grey primer. (always use grey primer unless your doing red, yellow, or really light color top coat) grey is alittle better adhersion.

the gold is a 3 step process.  first i sanded the frame, but thats not one of the steps.  1. self etching primer. 2. Duplicolor annodize base coat 3. duplicolor annodized topcoat.  then i used krylon clear coat on top.

this says to use on chrome, but they also make a silver base coat that creates a reflective surface to spray the top coat over.

1. self etching primer.  found some.....
2. Duplicolor annodize base coat 3. duplicolor annodized topcoat.  Is this the paint I want to use??? meaning you put two coats on it???
then i used krylon clear coat on top.

yea i got it on my bars.  http://s966.photobucket.com/albums/ae150/gregvhen/?action=view&current=IMG_1287.jpg&newest=1

But that was sprayed over chrome, not on the primer and base coat. these also got a layer of clear coat. but i didnt put alot of effort into the bars cause im painting flat black soon.  i just wanted to see what the paint would look like directly on chrome.

EDIT: fixed link

gregvhen

looking back i wish i would have done a blue frame instead of the gold. but i still like the gold so its fine

albertinhouston

I think i will go with blue.... I like it.
so....
strip the paint
spray etching primer
spray blue paint as a 1st coat
come back later on , spray a second coat
the clear it later on

that about it???

did you sand at all in there after E-primer maybe???

almost right.  after the self etching primer you need to spray on the duplicolor "metalcast" base coat, then blue.  and some spots on the frame i went all the way down to the metal cause i was gonna maybe polish the frame but decided 1. thats a ton of work and 2. i wanted some color.  but the between the primer and base you wont see any differance between sanding flaws, the issue is just making sure it'l stick.  so as long as the frame is clean of greese, oil, loose dirt, you can sand what you can, but the old finish doesnt have to all come off

gregvhen

on the right is what the base looks like

albertinhouston

Awesome thanks, I went looking for it yesterday and they didn't have the base coat at advanced auto.  It's super HOT and dry here right now, so I'm think if I can paint ASAP, I can use mother nature to sorta bake it on there a little. But I don't know if I can do that much painting and tear down and CLEAN everything in a week.  We will see.  :dunno_black:

a power washer makes things go much quicker if you gotta a freinds with one.  also use carb or brake cleaner in tight places if its really dirty, like by the linkage.  they clean exceptionally well and evaporates quickly.

I typically use laundry detergent. that stuff is better than any degreaser i've ever bought. BUT!!! It make things VERY slick and easy to slip and cut your hand.  My rims were grey from all the chain lube built for who knows how long. Put some tide on it and BAM!!! Sparkling WHITE once again.

madjak30

What about flat white on the tank and plastics with an anodized blue frame and swing arm and maybe some blue reflectice rim tape...if I keep my GS next year, I may go flat black with dark red frame and swing arm and red rim tape (my rims are black).

Thinking of going the cuiser route...comfort for the knees...but I still love riding my GS... :dunno_black:

Later.

When you use the primer, will that take away from the anodized look?  What if I used some of that "chrome" paint as a base coat or is that what the base coat is? would that help make it look more like your bars???

albertinhouston

I decided to go with a silver frame again. Cleaning every part is killing me.  all part will be individually washed by hand. :(  black parts will be freshened up. frame and swing arm will be silver. swing arm came out AWESOME ! I'm thinking of going a 89 blue and white scheme.

going to have some neat parts on it....
carbon fiber "LOOK" head light. updated bulbs (will post later)
shortie blinkers to match (front and rear)
SB brake lines
thinking about putting my 90 gsxr fox shock on it. really to get the COOL fox colors on it. and my BEAUTIFUL WHITE RIMS   :thumb:

will be painting the fairing tank and front fender..  NOT 100% sure yet though...

will be taking pictures

I'd like to UPDATE the intrument cluster if I can

ANY suggestions???
