So.... i finally took my gs on the highway today, was really nervous but i did pretty good for my first try.. so i had a good straight-a-way and i decided to open the throttle just to see how much i can handle.. i was in 6th gear and i when i hit 6k rpms, i started hearing a noise, sounded like the chain hitting something i wasn't sure but something like a clanking noise. scared out my mind i slowed down and it stopped, i tried accelerating again up to 6k rpms and i heard the same noise.. can anyone help me out or give me any advise on what to look over or check. I still consider myself pretty new to riding so forgive me for my vague description..

thanks..

mister

This "noise" just comes in 6th, right? 6th gear at 6k rpms?

How is your front sprocket?
Are there any tight spots on the chain?

Sure does seem like a chain issue. Does the chain have tight and loose spots?  In other words, does the slack vary as you rotate the rear wheel while on the center stand?

yes it only happened when i was in 6th gear, approaching 6krpms.. i will go check the front sprocket and chain again and get back to you. If the front sprocket is bad, how does that effect the bike?

It causes accelerated chain wear and noises in 6th gear!

so i checked the front sprocket yesterday and it looks good.. there was a ton of grime in there.. the chain seems good too.. i honestly don't know, i took it for a ride yesterday and went into 6th and 6krpms i still heard the sound but not as loud as before.. it sounds like a rattling or something is loose..

Do you get the same sound at 6000rpm in 5th gear? At 6500 in 5th?

gunnerz101

i can vaguely hear it in 5th hitting 6-6.5k rpms...

This is very off topic but i was just curious, how do you know if you need to change your fork oil? how often is it recommended to change it?

I had mine over 10k miles and never changed the fork oil. Not sure what recommended is.

Try dropping down to 4 Oreos and set your pilot screw 3 turns out.

oh ok cool, i just saw several topics so i got curious if i would need to change mine, i have no idea how to check to know if its low or not..

I believe you just take apart the forks and can measure the depth of it with a ruler. But if your seals aren't obviously leaking you should be fine. Most people change it out either because they are tired of the forks bottoming out on every bump, ar they are trying to reduce dive/ weight transfer when setting up for a turn.

my second theory is i believe something in the engine is rattling.. if there is some small pieces in there. any "easy" way to flush it out.. the other day i had tried the carb cleaner that u pour in the gas tank.. but dunno if it worked..
