Shortening turn signal stalks

I have my stock signals removed in an attempt to line them up with my new fenderectomy. I have everything taken apart, down to the empty stalks, but where do they need to be cut? Here's a couple pics:

Thanks!

The older ones had big long spacers that made them a foot long once you had them pulled apart. Do the newer ones not have those?

Hmm, now that I look at the stalks again they are a lot shorter than the original GS500E stalks. I'd still need to cut off the plastic washer thingy at the end because it won't fit correctly once I drill a hole into the fender. I'm going to do this with a dremel and then put everything back together. I'll post a pic as soon as I'm finished. Hopefully I won't run into any problems.

So after a few hours of messing around with the turn signals I was finally able to mount them next to the license plate:

I had to cut some plastic off of the bottom of the cowl in order for the signals to line up correctly and not look crooked:

I had to move the two (grab bars?) attached to the rear light bracket because the stalks were hitting up against them. Do I need this bars? I was thinking about cutting them off as they don't seem to have a purpose other than to keep the light from bouncing around.

The project is done finally and I'm happy with the results. I'll be using the stock signals until I can find some Buell Ulysses ones, but they look a lot better than they were previously.

On the GS500E, the fender braces mount the seat key, provide an attachment point for the bodywork, and support the fender. I don't have them on my race bike, but I also don't have a tail light. ou may be able to modify or remove them, IMO it should be pretty obvious whether or not they are truly necessary.

It seems like I could add some extra support to the tail light, then the braces wouldn't be necessary. It sucks that the braces are welded directly to the frame, otherwise I could have reshaped them somehow and drill a couple extra holes on each side of the frame.
