Ok, Petcock is changed and tank petcock clean......por 15 success.  The bike starts / runs just dandy.

May go 15 or 20 miles and it is starved.  What I don't understand is the fuel filter is bone dry at this point.

What fixes this is removing the fuel line from the far end of the fuel filter.  The clamp is not very tight and I can remove it by hand in about 3 seconds.  When I break this seal the fuel will flow freely through the filter and out.  If I reconnect the filter will fill with fuel.  Why the heck would this do this?

I thought I might have a clogged filter so I blew it out.......later replaced it......same situation.  This is a plastic body filter with a paper element inside.  Is it the type of filter or ?  If it was intended for a pressurized system would that do it?  I am stumped.

Thought about just mending the line with a piece of brass pipe and take my chances with carb sediment.

Input would be appreciated.

Will check it out.......that may be one of the few things I haven't messed with yet.

What do you mean by the carb vents though.  I know where the tank vent is and it was closed with rust when I first started messing with this.

Check out the Wiki for fuel filters; there is a pic of what you should have. Here's what is written there: ..... A lot of people have gotten in trouble by putting the wrong kind of filters on GS500 (i.e. filters with paper filter elements). Most automotive filters assume a LOT more pressure.....

The carb vent lines come from the middle of the carbs and run towards the air box.

What he said (But I fixed the HORRENDOUS dark blue font, so it's actually readable). I don't know what kind of filter you put on but you mentioned if it's assuming a pressurized system - you can't use one of those in our GS since we don't have pressurized fuel lines. If that's what you're using, take it back (or at least off), and get the proper one. I don't have one yet but I'm planning on picking one up this winter when I tear down the bike.

Ok guys thanks.  I just bought one I could see through and that is what was offered.  At the time I was trying to run this problem down and wanted to be able to do a quick check when the carbs were starved.  I have seen were people put in the metal type filter similar to what you would thread into a holly carb on a car.  I ordered some tygon lines but they were too big so I couldn't use them.  This would have given me the option of the metal filter and still being able to see the fuel.

As far as the carb vent, there is a similar sized line going to the T piece on top of the carbs.  I have checked that and the line is clear.  Thanks a million for the input.  I have read what seems like a thousand posts on starvation and petcock problems etc.  I was really frustrated to still be having fuel delivery issues after what I have done to it.  Perhaps the first vehicle I have torn down about 15 times.

After thinking about it I am really curious about the vent line creating a vac lock inside.  I will check it after work.

Thanks again all

Enjoy the ride.

Ok....filter was half full......turned it to prime expecting it to fill all the way.  It actually emptied all the way.  Figured it just filled bowls all the way up and had no more feed from up top.

Opened tank fill lid....no change.  I guess this one is meant for a pressurized syste.  Will get a metal one I can't see through and try it out.

Just an update on the saga.

Enjoy the day.

Ok....ditched the filter and put on some 5/16 vinyl line from home depot intended for gas etc.  I ordered a K&N fuel filter off flea bay for all of 6 bucks instead of the $37 from the link on the wiki.  Anyway, running it without the filter in line it performed fantastic.......all evening long.  Fast/slow....no matter.  She's fixed for real this time.  I will try the stock lines with the new filter when it comes in.

Have been sharing the pain.....figured I would share the pleasure with all of you too.

Enjoy the day
