MC crash in Ohio...who can explain this?

Ohio GS'ers...can one of you help explain this:

Is one of you familiar with this area?  How can a motorcycle, with two people aboard, SKID 900 FEET along (or on?) a concrete barrier...and STILL have enough momentum for the riders to be THROWN 500 feet AFTER the 900-foot skid?   I'm assuming this happened on a downhill, and they were "thrown" into a gulley or something.   I can't find any news video.  Are your roads covered in Teflon up there?

Wow!!!  They skid for three football fields then get thrown almost another two football fields.  I can't explain the physics of the crash but starting the crash at the top of a hill would be my guess as well.

My friends may be right after all, going out drinking and taking home woman half your age will only lead to trouble.

my guess is he was going really fast and somehow got over in the concrete barrier.  he didn't go down at that point but he was unable to steer.  so he skidded along the concrete barrier for 900 feet scrubbing off speed down to 100 or so.  when they struck the guard rail it launched them off the bike over the guardrail.

Usual inaccurate reporting from incompetent (too lazy to get it right) journalists sensationalizing the actual event.

Using some online calculators I come up with....

To travel 530 feet (164 meters) while launching at 45 degrees and starting a meter in the air with the speed I chose. Chosen speed is 40m/s or 89.5mph (144kph). Of course, this ignores wind resistance. So they'd need to be doing At Least a 100mph with a hang time of almost 4 seconds. But that's at Optimum projectile angle. I don't know.

I think most likely it's bad reporting.

Dont forget they also skidded along a concrete barrier for 900 feet before being launched. Which means at the point of being launched(at an optimal angle) they had to have still been traveling ~100mph

not possible for a gs:

900 feet, on fire, no way on a gs. the tank only holds enough fuel for 300 feet maybe, if your petcok isn't fuxored already.

500 feet in the air ? no freaking way. not unless it was dropped out of a 747. the only way a gs will ever go 500 feet in any direction is with airlift assistance.

physics and reporters don't mix well. hell, anything that requires work + reporters doesn't mix !



now, let's change over to a hayabusA:

900 foot slide, sure, yes. teflon frame sliders, on concrete, if the peeps hang on and don't cause skin resistance.

500 ejection ? sure, just put a beer can in the line of travel @ 190 mph. ok ok, maybe 50 feet vertical. that was a typo. you know reporters don't have speel czek.

8 to 271 is an overpass with a good incline. I highly doubt that a 2 up GS would be able to rocket to 120MPH. I've driven through there quite a few times. Thats a rough intersection lots of traffic. They would have had to be on the shoulder trying to pass and maybe if they struck the wall the bike might have went 900 with a cruise control and they were launched off the overpass and fell and landed some 500 feet. Still from that height they would have both perished on impact.

Leave it to the Canton Repository to botch an article.
