Hi there.

Yesterday I started to run into an issue with my 98' GS500.  The issue is that every time I go to turn it over when starting the bike, it backfires.  Loud as hell, and the motor still doesn't start.

I have tried to fiddle with the fuel mixture screw since, as well as make sure that the choke isn't stuck.  I'm really lost right now with this and am hoping to get some input that hopefully works out for me.

Thank you all ahead of time.

Also, I am looking to replace the tank on the bike as it has some bad denting on the right side as well as a long scrape.

Are there any aftermarket tanks I can use with my bike?  If so which ones (if you know off the top of your head).

Thanks!

This guy...http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=60812.msg703192#msg703192 keeps popping up trying to sell his rusty gas tank. He's got less than 20 posts so far, and most of them are asking for parts in threads that have nothing to do with the parts he's after, or else pimping this tank.

Was supposed to be a joke...sarcasm didn't translate from my head to the keyboard, I guess.

It will.

Big Rich

it will, but you need a 2001+ seat to match.

To add detail to the starting/backfire issue, i smelled gas and checked the plugs.  the right side seemed fine, the left side seems to be soaked in gas...

ideas?

Big Rich

Check for spark first on the wet side. Even swap the coils left and right, along with new spark plugs too.

Kind of weird, but I let my battery sit on the charger because I thought it felt a bit weak.  After charging I tried to start the bike and it fired up first try.  Possible that because of a weak battery, the plugs weren't getting a good spark?

Next order of business,

New bars came, I have all my controls off of the old bars.

Now, my question which may be dumb, is how to I replace the perch?  I have a new Clutch Perch on the way, and I have it off the bars, however I'm not sure how to get the current cable OUT of the perch in order to run it with the new perch when it comes.

Thanks guys.  Also I looked for some videos on the tube, however couldn't find any.   If anyone knows of some, post em here!

Thanks!

Ok,

Finally got the new bars on, and got the controls all put onto the bars.  Now heres another issue :x

My throttle no longer twists backward, it twists forward.  when the bike starts, it shoots right up in RPM's as if the throttle is being twisted.  I'm sure this is an easy fix, just wondering how.

Next when the bike starts and runs in neutral, my oil light goes on.  I dont believe that this used to happen.  I thought the light went on prior to starting.  I checked the oil and it appears to be full.

suggestions?

striz

I just disassembled the throttle again, and the cable wasnt sitting right inside.  Also after checking the oil, the light problem just stopped?  Weird right?

SAFE-T

Oil pressure sensor could be dirty/faulty. Check that first.

Ok,

So now that everything else seems to be fixed up, I have excessive smoke when I twist the throttle.  General consensus with some people I know seems to be that since it was laid down I could have some oil that got into the carbs or that I got some gas into the oil.

Either way I am familiar with how I should drain my oil and replace with fresh oil immediately as a precaution to getting gas in the oil.   Just looking for some more input as to which of these may be likely if any.

Thanks!

striz

Also have osme people saying just run it like I normally would and the smoke will just stop bc the oil leftover where it shouldn't be will burn off.

Input?
