I'm about to have a 30k service done on my K9. All sweet so far.

GSJack is nearing 100k and I don't think he's had any Major issues.

Just have some Mechanical Sympathy and keep it maintained - lubed, oiled, etc.

I don't know for sure that it's ever been re-built.. but the PO told me it was all original.. and looks it.. just over 50,000km now.
1995 GS500ES - Love it!

Irl I have only see one GS500 with >100K km...  :icon_neutral:

I like the GS very much but I'm not convinced that the engine is durable. I have seen plenty of CB500, Bandit 600, NTV with >100K km. Whatever, a second hand GS500 engine is still pretty  cheap.

Like I have posted I have now 9K and 11K respectively on a 1991 and a 2004. I do the maintenance my self. I use Stabil on the 1991 because I don't use it in the winter but I ride the 2004 year round. It is more stable in high wind. I ride in NJ and if you don't keep up with traffic 75MPH+ you get run over. And I ride a lot for 2 hours or more at that speed. I once got 150,000 miles out of my 1971 VW beetle so I am hoping with the same care I will get something comperable out of my bikes.

From what has been posted in other threads here, I'm expecting about 50,000 miles before it goes "boom".
And a quick off topic comment. . .
If you ride NJ anyplace north of the Raritan and east of 287, I would suggest a rabbit's foot and a hand gun.
It's not for the faint of heart.

LOL, I rode up 287 to NY 87 to check out OCC. I just ride smart and hold my ground in traffic. But a rabbits food and hand gun is a great idea :) !

I bought my 97 GS new and put just over 80k miles on it myself and then after I bought my 02 GS my son took the 97 and ran it up to 88k miles (approx 140k km).  He then put a low milage used engine in it at that time due mostly to high oil consumption at freeway commuting speeds.

Bought my 02 GS with just over 4k miles on it and it now has 84k miles.  It had a tight exhaust valve bucket when I bought it and since it warmed and freed up in a minute or less after startup and ran perfectly all day after that I let it go hopeing it would wear in and free up.  One cold morning at 21k miles with the temp around 32F outside the valve stuck open while cranking to start and it broke the valve off.  I replaced the valve and bucket and it's run for over 63k trouble free miles since then.  I don't consider a tight bucket that was misfit at the factory to be a reflection on the engines general durability and expect it to go over 100k miles now.

407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

Yes.
You're the guy that did the Orange County Chopper thread.
Nice photos too.

gsJack, if I divide my yearly distance traveled, by your total mileage numbers, I should be good for another 19 years!
Thanks for posting the data!
Good info as always.
