Hi all, just bought a 2009 gs500f about 7 weeks ago now,has 2000km on it.When i took it for the first service i told them about a small high pitch niose coming from the engine intermitantly.it wasnt happening very often then and took about 10 mins of the bike sitting their to hear it.You can now hear it everyday its not bad just anoying, when i had it seviced they gave me a loan bike for the day and it had exactly the same sound. When i got my bike back i metioned this to the mechanic and the only answer he could come up with is the floating cam,but i thouhgt that they fixed this prob with a sirclip long ago.just wondering should i take back to dealer and insist that they find and fix,or is it a sound that these bikes just make.I am most worried about resale price if i  let her go.

I do not "think" this is a common complaint.  My '08 does not do this.  Could be as innocent as a vacuum leak or as serious as a bad bearing.

If it was cam float it would be a knocking/tapping noise. Is there anyway you can record the sound and post it on you tube or something so we can have a listen?

someone at work today that races bike and is very wise about these things, took my bike for a spin then sat their litening for a few mins,he semms to think one of three things, loose cam chain, cam chain tensioner thats not working properly,or the valves not seating properly.just wondering if i should take back to dealer and demand that it be fixed,as the bike is only 2 months old and done only 200km,or if anyone else has an opinion on what else it could be,or is my workmate spot on. :thumb:

Danny,

OK. Listen to this, alright?

You have 200km on the bike. Therefore, it still has its original Transport oil and other stuff. At this stage, there is Nothing to worry about, ok? It's a new bike. It is covered by a warranty for the next 24 months. So it's all good, right?

Ride it for another 800kms. Change gears at 5000rpm. Don't take the tacho over 5,500rpm. Get used to how the bike feels. Then, once you hit 1000kms, take the bike in for its first service. During this service they will.... replace the oil, oil filter, lube everything, tighten everything and stamp your log book. IF you still think there is a Noise when you take it in after your 1000kms, mention it to them. Ask them to check it out. And when you get your bill for the service, double check that written on it is... that you said there was a noise - and - what they did about it (what they found). See. Now you have it in writing! So if Anything comes of it later, you are covered.

I have a naked 09 with 30,000kms on it. The headlight was loose. The other day I opened it and found a bracket with three tack welds had broken off. I superglued it back into place. Rode into the dealer yesterday, told him. The mechanic came out, undid the 2 screws, saw the broken bit and said.... I'll order the part and get the warranty paperwork going, I'll call you when the part is here, it'll probably be here before the warranty paperwork is clear, but don't worry it's all covered, I'll take care of it.

See. That's what warranties are for. So don't sweat it. If anything goes wrong with it - and it's doubtful - you'll be fine.

Now get out there and ride your additional 800kms...

One of my old bikes had a problem and I pretty much had to have to entire motor replaced under warranty, haha, I think that cost them about half what I paid for the bike between parts and labor costs. If you're still under warranty I wouldn't worry about it yet. They told you it wasn't a problem, so if the engine falls apart in a 4 months they can't say "well why didn't you tell us about this earlier?" I've never ridden a new GS, but I'd just do your best to find out what rpms and what kind of riding and everything else that makes it happen, and if it gets worse you can take it back in then.

resale ? we're talking about a gs, not a harley, right ?

forget it. it's prolly a loose fastener, or broken spot weld somewhere. ride the bike, enjoy it.

if they start talking about replacing the motor, and what you'll have to pay vs 'just trading it in on .......', you'll know they're up to no good. don't laugh, i've seen it happen. on warrenteed bikes. yep.

the gs is not a sewing machine. it squeaks, squawks, pops, and sometimes hiccups. but it will do it consistantly for thousands and thousands of fun miles. get to it.
