I set my intakes to the factory .001-.003" and my exhausts to .003-.005" which is .002" (.05mm) larger than factory spec.  I had a 82 CB750K with shim over bucket valves and the spec was .002-.005" (.06-.13mm) for both.  The CB was redlined at 9500 rpm and I rarely if ever go over that on the GSs, no point in it with a stock GS that has a HP curve that drops off fast after 9k.  That's plenty of range for the standard .05mm increment shims.

My GS does see revs in excess of 11K and I use your clearances. I'll let you know if I run into any problems, but frankly... I *highly* doubt I will.

So no one is going to answer the question?

I rarley run either of my bikes over 7500RPMs

I worrie about the vavles alot but if you are running it that high under stress. Should I feel safe?

I know for a fact in VW's if you fail to adjust you will be hurting. I never had a valve burnt but I have seen many.

Quick question..of all the people here does anyone have prior VW 1600cc Air cooled valve adjustment experince? I am just curious if anyone can compare the two for me. It seems to me on the GS it is a simple process. But reading this is seems to get more complicated the more it is explained.

Right....air cooled VW and Suzuki gs 500 are same but different.......

Same in that valve adjustment is very improtant, and improper valve adjustment will cause damage.....

VW had rocker arms.....the rocker arms had an adjustment screw and locking nut.......so you had to use a feeler gauge and turn the adjusting screw to adjust the valve clearance and then lock the nut...

The suzuki GS 500 has no rocker arms and no adjusting screw....the cam of the camshaft comes down directly on the valve......or to be more precise it comes down on the shim which is on top of the valve stem.....

So the clearance is detremined by the thickness of the shim...........the  only ajustment possible is by different thickness shim.......

Still a very simple process, but quite different from a VW.....

TY Sir you are a scholar and a gentleman. That is the best explanation I have heard.

So different but the same a feeler gauge and experince should make the job a snap?
