2001 Gs 500

I read that the vacuum hose from the petcock to the carbs should be connected to the left carb.  I also read it should be connected to the right side of the left carb.  How do we determine left vs. right?

When sitting on the bike holding handle bars my vacuum hose is connected to the carb on my right, throttle side.  Is this incorrect?  The port on the clutch side carb is smaller sizing and has a little rubber cap on it.  The vacuum hose does not fit on it, port too small.  Or am I using the wrong connections point all together (they are sticking up near the top of carbs).

I viewed the hose routing diagram but I cannot tell from it.

Additional, bonus question: I think i have limited my "only runs on prime" problem down to either the vacuum hose or the frame mounted fuel petcock (replaced washer in tank petcock).  I opened the frame fuel petcock and the diaphragm in there was dry and very loose almost blowing in the wind, but no holes or anything in it, what condition should it be in?  Cheap alternative petcock people are using?

Thanks for reading.

Don't know about the left vs. right, but I have read about the GS petcock failing.  This link should help...scroll down to "Why Upgrade."

Good day to you!

Paulcet

All left/right references are from the rider's perspective as sitting on the bike.

The petcock vacuum hose does indeed go to the right side of the left carb. The port you are looking for points to the right, not "up".

Thanks for the link Pelikan, I will give it a read.

Thanks Paulcet, I guess I better go have another look at what I have the vacuum hose plugged into then, and hopefully I can find the correct port, I will let you know.

Ok I went out and took a picture (sorry quality: bad garage lighting, cell phone, auto image resize on email) of where I have the vacuum hose from the frame mounted petcock attached to currently.

I searched all over the left carb for a port and I could find none; however, I did not remove from bike to search, as I just got done putting them back in!

So is this the wrong port, the hose fits so nicely, and I feel a very little vacuum when the bike is running?

So, anyone with a 2001 know what this port is for?  I still cant find the vacuum port on the left carb, so my only guess is I have some different then normal carbs, or maybe there was some change in the design along the way :icon_question:

There is no vacume port on the left carb the port you have circled is the vacume port for the petcock

These are off an '07

(The view is as if looking from the intake valves back at the carbs)
